I am wanting to get a new throttle body for christmas but i am unsure about what size to get. I have seen porting services on ebay for 52mm, then I have seen 55mm and 60mm on brand new ones. Then I have heard about people talking about porting the intake manifold. I dont think that porting the intake mani is an option right now, so what would be the ideal size for better performance?

holy jesus dont do that. hes a 2gnt, 420a motor, turbo tb will not bolt up. dont spread misinformation.

your tb is 52mm now, but technically is cut down to i think 47mm because of some hump in it. i think porting it to a true 52mm or sending it to howell to port it to 55mm will not require porting of the intake mani, but it would definatly help. once you get to 60mm, you have to add material to the manifold because you cant port it that big.

unless you plan on going turbo anytime soon, i would stick with a 57mm tb youll get the best flow :thumb:

Exactly. Unless you can force more air through it to maintain the velocity into the combustion chambers, you'll lose power at the cost of a super twitchy throttle. ;)

I looked on the howell site but didnt find where they port the TB. I dont know if $100 is to much to ask. Do you think that 52mm would give a decent gain? I am not trying to go all out on my car b/c i am still in Highschool but i already have I/H/E and an UDP and i am looking for a good next mod.

I have a 60mm jeep tb and i did'nt loose power,i did lose a little low end but it pulls real nice up high.I'm currently port/polish gasket matching my intake manifold.I already matched the mouth of the intake mani to 60 mm and I did'nt have to add any amterial.I'll be dine by this weekend and will let you guys know how it goes.

im still in high school and hope to rebuild before the end of the school year. go all out on that bi***

how did you port it to 60mm without adding material?

My parents aren't fans of me modding my car. My dad is a mechanic, so he notices things if i change it without talking to him.

And like I said, will I notice anything from porting it to 52mm, or what else would be a worthwile mod.

do it it is next on the guide for you

Bored-out Throttle Body
Increase the opening on your throttle body to increase air intake.

Ported Intake Manifold
Further increases air intake.

Camshafts and Cam Gears
Agressive camshafts and cam gears allow for more power through timing adjustment.

I wouldnt pay someone 100 bucks to take that hump outta your stocker. You can get advanced racing dynamics (ARD) in houston to port them to 55mm or 57mm for something like $150 if they still offer that service. I think that may even include them doing the intake manifold as well. I used to know the prices but its been a while. but 100 bucks for something you can do yourself with a dremel isnt worth it. I remember a guy doing a writeup on 2gnt a long time ago with pics when he took the hump outta his. Said he didnt really notice a huge difference.

There is a service were i can get it ported to 52mm for $40. Then they powder coat it. My questions was......Will 52mm be noticable or should i not bother.

I didn't. :D (and the pic is of the TB I used off a parts car before I cleaned it all up)

And I wouldn't trust ARD with a lump of dog shit. I've seen how well put together their 2.6L stroker 420a was. Shameful and had to be almost completely rebuilt by the new owner. Granted, it was custom work in a relatively new area, but still. Taking a grinder to the underside of a CF hood because you didn't fab proper mounts to allow room for the wastegate on the manifold is a hack job any way you look at it. Also, I've seen some of their headwork. I don't think anyone asks to have their chambers ported so differently from one to another that it could give you different CRs in each cylinder. It didn't last and blew up on the dyno. It was unsalvagable too. The owner had to buy another head and have it completely redone from scratch. That would suck.

your stock tb is already 52mm in diameter.the intake plenum mouth is 57 mmthats why peopl say you get the best flow out of a 57 mm tb.also they say that 60mm is too big for na and while it is sucking in more air,it's loosing velocity as it's going in to your engine and thtas why they say there might be a power loss.again I did notice a little loss on low end and i did notice some gain at top end on the butt dyno.I can't say wich tb is better cuz i don't have one to try out and compare to mine.
As far as porting the moth of my intake amny to 60mm I just ported and measured with a caliper till i got to 60 mm.there is enough material.I am planing on cams in the near future so If I do loose any power I'm sure I'll gain it back then.If not, theres allways nitrous :p

the stock tb actually gets cut down to 47mm i believe because of some hump in it. thats what hes talking about porting it to 52mm. a true 52mm

well I'm finished porting the intake mani today.Feels the same on the street. On the freway after 75 mph till bout a 100 it picks up a little bit faster nothing out of this world.Didn't wanna go faster than 100 it was 10 am ;)

The stock throttle body is 52mm's from the plate to the outlet where it meets the intake manifold. The taper is what everyone bores out when they do it themselves. The larger numbers like 55, 57, and 60mm's refer to throttle bodies provided by other companies or the Jeep TB modified to fit the 2gnt.

If the car is auto, don't put the 57 or larger TB's on the car. If it is 5spd, 57 is fine, 60 will have poor low end response but more airflow at higher RPMs.
