Alright so I know theirs a cleaning solution and a oil for the, but someone mentioned to me you can clean them by just throwing them in the dishwasher. Is that true?

I wouldn't suggest putting it in the dishwasher, I've never heard of that, nor would I do it. The cleaning kit costs about $12 and it lasts a long time. It has the special soap to clean it and then the oil to re-oil it. It doesn't take that long. The longest part is waiting for it to dry. Just read the instructions carefully and don't over oil.

I just cleaned mine this past weekend. i sprayed on the k&n cleaning solution, then let it sit for ten mins and then put it under the sink in my garage with the water flowing from the inside to the out. athis is to make sure that you wash all of the dust and stuff away from and out of the filter. I was amazed at the color of the water as i washed it. After that i let it AIR DRY, put the k&n oil on and put it back onto the car. It made a huge difference.

A paint brush helps to clean out the "chunks" from the creases before you spray it down with cleaner if its that dirty. Doesn't take long to do the whole process.

I would also recomend cleaning it at every oil change.

An air filter does more filtering once it's "dirty", and after the larger openings have been "clogged" with other debris which in turn becomes filtering media.
Once a year, as K&N recommends, is more than plenty.
