Okay, my tranny isn't bad and my clutch isn't gone yet, but I do know it had been starting to slip. Also, the car would grind going into second quick at high RPMs, all normal for a car with 125K miles on it.

Well, on saturday I was driving out to see my friend and I decided to do a quick take off and do a power shift to second when it just didn't go in gear and ground pretty bad. It had happened before so I didn't think much of it. After that, i just put it back in neutral, let the clutch out, put the clutch back in and went to put it in easy and it ground a lil going in, but still went in. Ever since then, it grinds going into second even in an easy shift. I can get it to go in with out grinding if i just hold the clutch in and just kinda let the shifter feel an opening to fall into second. (or that's at least what i feel like it's doing, but it works to get in). This is extremely annoying tho because I'm just sitting there with the clutch in while my revs are falling down and im just slowing down. But no matter what, it won't ever ease into second from third in this manner. I have gotten it to go in without trouble maybe once with doing a double clutch rev match, but not often. although that could just be because I suck at doing such a thing LOL.

Is it most likely that I just completely destroyed that synchro and just be really careful not to destroy the gear before I get it replaced? And how much would I be looking to spend if I were to do the work myself?

I had the exact same thing happen ... for me it turned out as bad as it could possibly get though. My intermediate shaft was screwed up and 2nd gear as well ... syncros were ok. I'd replace at least the gear and syncro while it's apart .. the gear was like $80.

Alright, thanx. If all the gear really is is 80 bucks, then I might just do that. I'll try to inspect it best I can and get some other people's thoughts too. I want it running as best I can without having to spend too much on it, cuz I don't have too much I can spend.

but you don't know how much the synchro would be? It shoudln't be bad... it's just like a lil brass disc or ring or whatever, usually right?

This just happened to me and my car is in the transmission shop right now its been there for over 3 weeks and i am finally gettin it back today. Mine did the same thing and when i say that i mean THE SAME THING... It started grinding everytime i shifted into 2nd and I did sometimes manage to get it not to grind by shifting really fast. Then about a week or so later 2nd gear just disappeared... I no longer could shift into 2nd at all no grinding,.. nothing at all... i had to rev it up to high rpms so i could skip over 2nd to hit third taking it to the shop. syncros were shot and i broke one of the shifting forks and some other part deep in the tranny. Cost me $650 to be rebuilt. Althought i thought the grinding was bad it turned out all my gears were fine and they didin need to be replaced. I think you should take ur car to the shop asap and have the tranny looked at.

PS. oh yea, my car has 123k miles on it

See... that's the thing... I'd rather not take it to a tranny shop. All the ones around here especially like to rip people off. And i have one of those dad's that can do anything. And when i say anything i mean ANYTHING. Like im talking fixing anything from a Diesel engine to a big boiler, from working on an automatic honda engine to working on a gas turbine engine.. I don't know how he does it but I've seen what he can do, and he flat out told me he would have no problem fixing it, as long as he has the time.

Besides... if it's gonna be in a shop or something for 3 weeks... I don't have that much time...nor money to spend on someone else doing the job.
