just need some tips/advice on tune-up/maintenance

hey everybody, i just bought this as a 2nd car/beater car to learn to drive 5-speed. test drove it yesterday and the clutch is really tight, needs possibly adjusted. the car has oil sludge built-up on the side of the motor, im guessing it needs new valve cover gaskets. which brings t some questions on maintenance.
1-what part number is for the valve cover gasket at places such as advanced auto/pep boys? would that stop the oil leak assuming thats where its coming from?
2-how many quarts of oil does the motor take as well as a part number for the oil filter? the oil when i checked it was black *blah*
3-im going to check the tranny oil and i understand theres the drain and also a fill plug. whats the general oil to use when i drain out the old oil via the drain plug? also when i refill i should fill it via the fill plug but should the drain plug also be left open so i know where the level is at?
4-whats the stock idle on the 1.8L?
5-the 1.8L is known as the 4G37?

If the leak is the gasket of course a new one would fix it, You shouldn't need the part number just go in and tell them what kind of car you drive and what part you need. I am not sure how much oil the 1.8's hold I would get 5 from the store and start by putting 4 in it run the car for about 10 seconds, let it sit for a minute and check the level.

thanks guys for the advice. i will pick up a chilton's manual later today(at work right now). the car has 212K miles on it but most of the pasrt were replaced by the previous owner such as the timing belts, alternator, tps sensor, injectors, clutch is 2yrs old and she's driven it for 10yrs as her DD FWIW. i'll be around the forum searching old posts and what not, just wanted some quick answers

Having owned a 1.8L Eclipse GS a long long time ago, I can help.

1-what part number is for the valve cover gasket at places such as advanced auto/pep boys? would that stop the oil leak assuming thats where its coming from?

The valve cover gaskets on the 1.8L tend to go bad more than the 2.0s because the 1.8L valve cover is only held by 2 bolts in the middle. As for part number just go to advanced auto/pep boys and ask them for a valve cover gasket. You don't need a part number.

Look at the owners manual or get a Haynes manual.

Look at the owners manual or get a Haynes manual for the tranny fluid. You drain the gear fluid via the drain plug and when all he fluid is out, you put the drain plug back on. Then you take out the fill plug and put new fluid in. If you leave the drain plug open, everything that you fill through the fill plug will fall out of the drain plug. There is no level, you fill it until it is full. When it starts to come out of the fill plug, it is full.

If I remember correctly, 750 RPMs. Check the manual of this one too.
