like the title says i just had revison 3 lifters installed on my 1993 eclipse gsx b/c we thought that was what was causing my car to phantom knock and retard the timing. but after installing the lifters my car still knocks around 30-40 which still retards the timing. do you think the lifters just need a couple days before it will stop knocking? any ideas on what this may be would be appreciated b/c at this point i am stumped. thanks a lot.

What oil are you using...?

and yeah, according to experts in the subject a period of 500 miles is most likely needed for them things to break in...

then again you might want to check you oil pressure though, might be to low and fresh oil is not getting to your lifters as it should.

My oil pressure gauge is always on the low side. At idle its flat on the lowest line and around 4k its about a 1/4 past the first line. According to the manual this is normal. The lifters are not noisy at all, but there is still the knock. What might be causing the low oil pressure?

yeah i guess i will just give it a few days. the lifters on our 1991 talon was just replaced not to long ago and the knock went away very quickly. i would say within 25 miles of driving on it. thats why i thought that it was odd that my car was still knocking. and ofcourse the knock has to happen really bad when im trying to pull out of somewhere but cant b/c my timing is being pulled. so any more suggestions on what could be the cause of this would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot

There is zero knock at idle. As the car boosts it quickly goes to 43 and at full boost it gradually drops down into the 30's. It has all the same symptoms as the talon did, but this fix didn't work. Could it possibly be the knock sensor, also I have read posts of the CAS causing it. Is there anyway to test either sensor?

the car is completely stock. a knock count of 43 would be extremely unlikely on a stock car. there have been no mods to the fuel or intake systems which is what leads me to that it is phantom knock not real knock. so solutions for symtoms will most likely not work. the car uses 93 octane fuel always.

does anyone else have any ideas on what can be causing the phantom knock? thanks

no i didnt check the knock sensor yet. where is that located and how do i check it to make sure it is working other than seeing black goo come out?

-Back side of the block by cylinder #2, behind the intake manifold bracket, feel your finger to where the wire come off the sensor, there's black filler material where the wire come out, when mine sensor went bad, it leak out this black goo.

hmm ok thanks i will have to check that. im gonna get the base timing checked on friday as well so ill let you guys know what happens. thanks again

so i had nate take a look at my base timing over at dsmmotorsports and he says its perfect. that being said he recommended that the knock sensor may be going bad so i picked one up. ill let you know what happens after i install it. thanks for the help guys

Just installed the new knock sensor. When I took the old sensor out it was gooey and was partially coming out, so I assume it was bad. Took the car for a ride after the install and for the first 4 miles or so the car was driving great, but the knock counts were still fluctuating into the 20's. This didn't effect the car, but after the first 4 miles I was cruising at about 50 and that distinct sound of the timing being pulled happened. Sure enough there was 43 counts of knock, timing was being pulled to -5, and of course the car was going nowhere. I am running out or ideas on what to do to take care of this problem. It is making me hate my car! I was told I should look at my 02 sensor next. Does anyone else have any ideas? My car idles perfectly, and the engine is very smooth, so I don't thing it the balance knock. The car does have a evo turbo and mani, but those are the only mods, and it is running stock boost. Nate at dsmotorsports said he thinks its electrical. What other sensors could I possibly replace. I am putting a new o2 in tomorrow(if I can get the damn thing out). After that I know there is the cas and maybe do the ecu. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

well i always make sure that i use atleast 93 octane fuel. ive tried different gas stations thinking it may just be there gas but it stil happens. *shrug* ill keep you guys posted and let you know what happens after i change the o2 sensor. untill then keep putting your input! anything is worth a shot. thanks

What makes you think its phantom knock??? Just because the car is stock doesnt mean you cant get knock :talon:

Its only a part throttle knock at low rpms. Never knocks when the rpm is higher than 3 grand. Problem is once it starts it wont go away until the accelerator is let off and depressed again. Im sure many of the other "victims" of this issue will tell you the exact same thing I have. You are right there is something wrong with the vehicle it has phantom knock.

This about sums it up as best as I could explain. If it were real knock it would not go away after I let off the gas and get right back on it. This quote from another thread is exactly what I have, and it seems quite a few others have it as well. Hopefully it can be figured out, and save alot of frustration.

Thats not true. It can work either way. Phantom or true knock. There are certain situations where leaving off the throttle and getting right back on it, is just acting like a bandaid or other words masking the situation. If you have access to a logger, i suggest doing a 3rd gear log at WOT and posting the results. If you really feel this is phantom knock, any type of vibration can cause phantom knock if its violent enough. Did you check your BS like BUCK said? Hell a bad motor mount would probably have worse results than lifters would if that is the case :talon:
