ok, about a week ago i was racing a friend in a 5.0 mustang, i lost the first race because i missed a gear, and plus it didnt look like i was going to win,:beatentodeath: so i got out and turned the boost all the way up, i make one run, and open the hood, and the exhaust and hot side of the turbo was glowing red,but nothing acted weird. but i notice that the plug on the back of the alternator was off and was up against the downpipe, it was somewhat melted but still usable. now i dont know how long i have been driving with it unplug, but after i let it cool down, it will not crank. the battery is at 12.9 volts, but it will not crank on its own, i have to jump start it every time, all the fuses look good, and all the connection look good, any ideas,,?

I have a friend who is having a similar problem with his. The battery will not hold a charge, and the alternator is FUBAR'd. Which wire are you talking about from the alternator? the smaller wire or the actual plug? By the way if you have your smaller wire still connected can you tell me where to connect it? because it's not covered in the Hayne's manual.

If its the small wire I'm thinking of, there should be a small screw towards the bottom of the front of the alternator...My wire was shot so I had to crimp a connection on the end and screw it back up.

Fox, how many pounds of boost were you pushing on your turbo to have it glowing red? Doesn't sound really healthy, and ifyour fuel set up is still stock, along with the stock 14b thats not a good thing. Stock fuel pump = not turning up the boost past 15-16psi. With an aftermarket, its pointless to go past 21 pounds of boost because your out of the turbo's efficiency range. And if you are on 21psi on the stock intercooler, you need to have plenty of cool down time or something to help cool the intercooler between passes because all you're doing is heat soaking it. Good luck with the problem.

well i think i was running it around 15,, yeah it was stock fuel with a boost leak, but i found the boost leak, there are only two connectors on the alternator that i know of, a connector and a wire, the wire go below the connector, it a little stud with a nut on it,, i took the turbo off the car and found the nut on the compressor side had back off, the compressor wheel it all most gone,, there is so much side to side play in it,, i guess thats what i get for trying to rebuild a turbo,, LOL

Running your car hard will cause your manifold and your turbos hotside to glow. This type of heat isnt good on the rest of the components in the car like your alternator. That glow is usaully normal when running hard.

I understand that running a car hard can cause the mani and turbo to glow, I just read the "I turned the boost up all the way" line and didn't know how much that was. Hopefully you have an aftermarket boost gauge, and your not going off of the 15psi from the factory gauge. I run 21 psi on mine and my turbo doesn't end up glowing red..thats why I was curious. Good luck with the car and getting it all running right man!
