Yeah, so I hate this damn car!
So I got it and the electrical was all screwed up. Apparently sitting like 6 years will do that. Got that straightened out and the turbo took a crap. Now it has been replaced with a 14b off of a first gen. I decided to do a boost leak test just to make sure I got everything good and tight and the funniest thing happened. I couldn't get it on top dead center with all the timing marks lined up. As best as I can tell it is at least a few teeth off. Give or take. This thing was showing 190 psi across the board on compression before, and dead nuts on timing, now I am scared to look at it. This is my first dsm and for the life of me I can't see the appeal in these freaking things. I don't know what to do. Do I pull the motor and put a new timing belt on it and pray that fixes everything, or do I rip the whole motor apart and get the valves replaced? I just want the damn thing to run and drive for now. If I can get that maybe one day down the road maybe I can start shooting for more hp even though there's no replacement for displacement. I am really starting to think I should have stuck with v8's. Any
ideas on the next course of action would be really appreciated. Thanks guys
I know it sounds like I am ripping on DSM's pretty hard but remember, people thought fire was the devil too.

I was able to tell a friends car had bent valves by taking off the valve cover and finding rocker arms loose or not contacting the cam lobes.I think the love for these cars is that you become one hell of a mechanic,if you like to do things yourself.

Yep the car itself sat for 6years. I should have specified the engine was put in last year. It was supposed to be a JDM motor with a fresh rebuild. The only supposed problem was a bad turbo. I replaced the turbo with another T25 that turned out to have a bad shaft seal. I have rebuilt motors and transmissions in the past even though I am not a tech at a dealership or anything. I am a helicopter mechanic for the government, so yeah I like to do things myself so I know they are right. As far as this car goes I guess I just took the previous owners word and it wasn't as good as I thought it was. I think my next plan of attack is to reset the timing and do a compression check to make sure I didn't destroy anything. If that's ok I will get a new timing belt to install and while I am there I am going to do a balance shaft delete the right way. Looks like I may mod this car before I ever intended to

Okay,How did it get out of time? Did it do this while you were trying to turn the motor over by hand? Was it running okay before you tried to put it at TDC? I'm confused as to the timeline of what happened. If you haven't driven it with it off time or tried to start it I wouldn't do so now. Confirm the marks. If they are off do a new belt right then and there. Once you are sure the car is timed correctly do another compression test or even better a leak down test. That is IF the marks were off. If the marks are still on at least confirm the tensioner is correct. I doubt you did any damage if I'm reading this right and you haven't started it and it is indeed out of time. More info please.

I have been dealing with a few issues on the car before I got to the current situation I am in now. Long story short I bought it not running. Fixed it and got it running albeit poorly but running. The car would sit and idle fine but as soon as it started boosting it blew smoke out of the exhaust. I determined the shaft seal was bad so I shut it down. No weird noises or pops, or anything of the sense. Now I got a new turbo and decided to do a quick blt just to make everything was tight. I wanted to set the car to tdc to start off and that was when I realized the timing marks wouldn't line up. The cam marks will line up but the harmonic balancer mark is way past the tdc mark. Really I have no clue what I did wrong. Like I said I am just going to reset the timing and check it out to make sure there is no other damage, then if there isn't I am just gonna replace the belt and rock on. Thanks for all the help.

oh and no I didn't try to turn the engine by the cam gears. I understand it can happen but that's not the case here. Thanks a lot for all the help and suggestions again.
