JDM Switchable T-case [Merged 1-8]

Near the output shaft on the tcase is a 12 mm bolt holding down a flat bracket. That's the one you pull. You need either a welded center diff, or a switchable trans to do this without frying your vc though.

it came with the trans that has 4wd or 2wd settings. also about the VC is it possible to replace just that in an transmission? i have one outher trans that shifted fine just always sent power to the rear wheels ,like it was rear wheel drive. :laser:

If it was like rear wheel drive, you probably have a bad center diff. You can make the trans switchable though. You'd want to swap the center diff, the last 2 casings, and everything between those casings (5th gear, drive gear, vc and it's shift fork). You could do that with the trans on the car as well if you want. The switchable trans has a 22 spline output shaft, you need to make sure your current trans has that if you want to use the switchable tcase as well.

what happens if you put a switchable t-case on a non switchable tranny? Could you put a switchable t-case on a regular tranny. Would it be switchable then?

The switchable t-case merely dissengages the rear drive. You'd need a welded diff, or v/c eliminator to use a regular trans, along with a matching spline count on your output shaft (22).

Hey does anyone know were I can purchase JDM Switchable 5-sp AWD/2WD tranny? Other then the switching of awd vs 2wd does this tranny have any Negitives like is it weaker than the normal awd tranny. Any Ideas on what the cost of one Used or New would be?

Thanks for the info,

Ken

Try one of the JDM engine suppliers. They usually sell them for around $800 (w/transfer case).

One problem is that some of those trannys came with larger front axles, so you can not use them with DSM axles. I am not sure what are your odds of getting one of those trannys, but I would make sure that they guarantee that it will take the DSM axles.

Ok I found one from a local guy. I put it in and it works great. in 2w and awd..

Thanks guys,

Ken

yeah the stock ones fit up fine. I guess I just got lucky... its kind of a pain to switch but its great if you don't have an awd dyno around.. to engage awd you just push in a plunger and bolt it down.

Thanks again,

Ken

Um.....

I may be wrong, but isnt it a JDM SWITCHING TRANSFER CASE

the tranny has nothing to do with it.

You are wrong. JDM switchable transfer case, comes with a matching, switchable tranny. But you can "switch" the US spec tranny by installing a VCE or a welded center diff.

hmm, interresting, but why?

why have 2 switching things beside eachother that do the same thing.

In order to run FWD, you must first lock your center diff and then disconnect the transfer case.

In order to run 4X4 mode, you just lock the center diff (leaving transfer case connected).

So you need two switched one on the tranny and one on the transfer case.

The odd part is that factory didn't have an actuator for them (at least I haven't been able to find one)! You actually had to jack up the car and manually switch them. Seems very strange for an OEM feature...

Okay I have searched around enough to get the gist of the switchable JDM spec transmission. I seem to be seeing a lot of conflicting statements about it. First off, will putting it on a 1g or 2g cause strain on the VC? Do you need a new rear diff for it? Will it fit in ANY 6bolt? 7 bolt? Has anyone put one in their car? Anyone looked for one recently? Easy to find? Because the gear ratios are different I seem to read that it can mess with the car quite a bit, I don't quite understand that one so much. I need a new transmission soon, and If I am going to go all out for a sweet rebuild, I might as well go all out for the switchable action for dyno days (No AWD dynos in Nebraska). So these questions are as much for me as they are the rest of people that are curious. Gurus, post away.

Im dropping the transmission out of my 95 tsi today to rebuild, my question is will a awd switchable from 2/4 wheel drive transmission out of a 90 jdm galant work in the 95? i found one locally for a good price and i wouldnt have to wait for parts to rebuild mine and i wouldnt mind having the one im rebuilding for a spare. im sure it will mount up about the same but im unsure of the internals of the 1g as the only 1g ive ever has apart was a 1.8. i know the 1g and 2g half shafts are different and i really wouldnt want to change them since the ones in my 95 have like 50 miles on them. id really appreciate some feedback if anyone has messed with the 1g switchable transmission, i never even knew they were produced until this week. thanks alot

oh damn.... i just assumed they did, i read some threads about people putting a 95awd transmission in a 90/91..... damn... thanks

You have to know what you are doing, but you can swap the switchable parts to a 2G trans if you want. I did that on my 2G a long time ago and it was pretty neat.

haha if thats the case i better just leave it alone, these engines i can peal apart in no time but so far im not a fan of the awd tranny. this transmission is being a pain, 2 1/2 hrs into it and i aparently missed a bolt on the top of the case somewhere because the bottoms open and the top just wont seperate. i looked arount the entire case for something i missed but see nothing, i thought i read somewhere theres a 12mm bolt somewhere in the mix of 14mm and i didnt come across it yet so i'm going to find that tutorial hopefully. I'll post the pictures of the parts i need hopefully yet tonight if not tomorrow. If you could help identify the parts and give me a price i'd appreciate it jack...... thanks again all
