JB Weld instead of bolt on balance shaft removal

This may be an idiot question but it is also a technical question - on balance shaft removal - vfaq states that on the BS tensioner pully bolt hole - to use a shorter bolt and seal it - I had the idea of using JB Weld heavy on both sides of the cover instead of using a bolt..also roughing up the hole a bit with a file to aid it in sticking good.

Has anyone done this with success or failure in past
- is this a true idiot idea????

I really don't think it is going to be hard finding a shorter bolt for the cover. I wouldn't trust onyl jb weld on it. I went with a shorter botl with jb weld on the threads and screwed it in to stay like that forever without leaking.

I'm having trouble visualizing which bolt you are thinking of subjecting to this epiphany. Without looking at JB Weld specifications I would guess the tensile strength would be in the order of 10,000 psi and that of a bolt depending on grade between 70,000-90,000 psi. This does not take into consideration that the bolt would have a torque value clamping force which cannot be achieved by potting JB Weld in a hole.

While the idea may not qualify as idiotic, doing it would. or ... don't quit your day job just yet.

I used short Bolt - Washer - & wad of RTV - no problems & more secure than just JB Weld IMO.

Yeah, just get the shorter bolt and put some loctite and rtv on it and it will seal just fine. JB WELD should definately NOT be used in this case, as it is very easy to just get the right bolt.

It may help the front cover seal having the bolt.

You can also use the same bolt and a spacer.

I just installed the BS tensioner pulley and bolt..it's not like it's hurting anything with the pulley just sitting there. I suppose it looks "neater" without out, but really, it's not a big deal. It's the simplest and effective way to do it. Just use some RTV on the threads of the bolt, and torque to spec. Dont have to worry about a shorter bolt, JB weld, ect..

Same here . Why buy another bolt , regardless of price . For those of you who say they are cheap . you have those parts at arms length without going anywhere .
