it backfired and now it's just sputtering

I was driving and pull up to the stop stop get ready to leave i pull out in first it makes a big popping sound and it sounds like it backfired and now its just sputtering it sounds like it cant get fuel. If you rev it up in neutral it revs fine but when i let go of the throttle its tries to die on me.

From my experience you have 1 of 2 problems:
1.A boost leak (do the test, even if you are sure that isn't it)
2.An ignition failure of some kind. (usually the power transistor) I know of quite afew guys who spent alot of time and money replacing parts before figuring out it was the power transistor (I'm one). They do go just that fast. One second they work, the next they don't.

agreed, this could most likly be the problem, check all of your timing marks before you do anthing. might be able to save yourself some valves while your ahead.

ps. of jumped belt is the case, get a new belt and tensioner. And pray you don't have bent valves

This is what i could think of that may cause your car to sputter.
-checking spark plugs/ insulator/ wires
-adjust fuel inj system/ replace if necessary
-checking for vacuum leaks
-fuel filter
-check cylinder compression

ps, do you have less power than before?

That just happend to me and it was an IC coupling
