Is there any difference between a fwd starter vs an awd one for a 91 talon tsi? I have the fwd version of the 91 tsi and my starter took a crap so I bought a reman from advanved it tested good so I replaced my bad starter with the reman and now the car wont start. Any ideas?:banghead:

When we did my buddy's awd swap we used the correct plate with his old starter and it would grind there is a difference I'm sure we swapped the other one in it went away.

Ok cool theres my problem then I got a starter from advanced and ive been racking my brain why its grinding its an awd starter.
One more thing....is there a difference between a turbo and nonturbo 2.0 starter plate if they are both 5 spds

Well awd and fwd flywheels are different, and I know the 2g starters are different fwd to awd, so I think it would be safe to assume the answer is yes.

Yes there is a difference.

This isn't even true for 2Gs. Model for model along with corresponding model years, the starters are the same. All 1G AWD cars use the same starter as the 1G FWD turbo cars with a manual transmission.

On a 1G, starter plates would be different between those two iff you are speaking strictly FWD. The AWD starter plate for a 5-speed is the same as the 2.0L non-turbo for a 5-speed or any 1.8L.

Well I just did my AWD swap in the spring, and I can say for sure the starters are the same (at least on a 2G). I used the same starter as I had when I was FWD. The spacing on the bellhousing and starter plate are all thats different.

Never mind, somehow didn't see the 1G part of it..... :banghead:

They sometimes have different part numbers (depending on brand), but from what I have found is that they will bolt to and work on any year fwd or awd. My last dsm, a 96 spyder gst had a starter that was directly removed from a 93 tsi.
