Is the stage 3 dsm chip knock gauge accurate?

Anyone with the stage 3 keydiver chip hook up a logger while watching thier stock boost gauge to see if they match? I have a brand new knock sensor. I am curious because I am able to run more than stock timing and 24 psi on pump gas with no knock according to the knock gauge. I have seen the knock gauge come on before when my timing was too low and it was running like ass, but now that I have advanced it, it runs better and I dont see any knock on the stock boost gauge. I am wondering if I set it right because if I set it at between 5-8 degrees, it is slow and knocks, but if I increase it to 12 (ungrounded) it runs better and doesnt knock.

I had Jeff configure this for my second chip and I can verify that it does indeed work. The reason that you're able to run such high boost on pump gas is that he uses a very mild timing curve that should hit 16 degrees at 6000 RPM and then stay constant unless you have him configure it otherwise. The mentality behind this is that, provided you have adequate fuel delivery, that making more boost is much more potent than running the same or lower boost with higher timing.

I've run my Big 16G on the stock SMIC, 550's/190 at 20 psi on a warm intercooler and encountered no knock according to the gauge, however, I haven't been able to verify this with a logger.

Hope that helps,

Andy

I hope you are right about this, I didnt think jeff messed with the timing at all with 2g's but I guess I am wrong. I noticed that my car felt really slugish on stock timing. So I advanced the base timing quite a bit till I felt some good power, I did not confirm the timing with a light just yet, but I will wednesday when I get my new turbo. I am pretty sure it isnt any higher than 13 degrees( ungrounded of course) Jeff told me to set my base timing at about 9 but when I set it at 9 it was really slow. So I set it at 13 and the car felt "fixed" Also I might add that my new motor only has 150 psi accross the board :notgood:
so maybe thats why I can run that high timing and boost with no knock.

just to add some info to this, the 2G ECU cannot show knock to any logger other then DSMLink, which requires the DSMLink chip. (Ofcoarse I dont know if Jeff has eliminated this problem with his chip but I doubt it).

Bastard1g - I think there's a difference in our numbers since you have a 6 bolt and I use a 7 bolt. My timing is indeed not adjustable as your is. If you didn't let Jeff know that you have a 6 bolt, that would account for the reason that your timing curve was set differently than mine. I'm reaching here, but if you had a 1G ECU, that would make sense as well. The one thing I'm not sure about is what the timing usually is on a 2G at 6000 RPM, but I've heard from a knowledgeable source that it's 16 degrees and that Jeff leaves it alone at this point. Finally, I think your compression numbers have plenty to do with the high boost/no knock equation.

Rowlex - I wasn't aware that you couldn't log knock on a 2G except by using DSMLink, but I can verify that Jeff's chip does show knock on the factory boost gauge if the motor really is knocking. I tested it myself and induced knock by running 19 psi on my stock injectors before switching to 550's.

Hope that helps,

Andy

Andy - from what I have read (I also have a pocketlogger from pocketlogger.com) is that the standard obdII programming doesnt send the knock signal out to the obdII port. Before I had dsmlink I would log with my logger and it never even displayed an option to see the knock count.

sorry to cut in guys, but i was reading this and got curious. So theres no way to read knock on a odbII dsm without having dsmlink?

Rowlex - Thanks again for letting me know on this since DSMLink would be the way to go for me when I outgrow Jeff's chip. FYI, you may want to drop Jeff a line, or I can do it, and find out just how he gets it to show knock. Aside of fuel cut elimination, this is likely one of the best features of the chip. Or is it the injector compensation, or no airflow cap, or.....?

Yessir, that would be correct unless you use a DSMChip arrangement that will show knock on the boost gauge.

I dont know how, but it seemed to good to be true with all that timing and boost. I guess we will see when I get my new turbo on that flows 48lbs per minute.
