Okay well i have a 91 Talon TSI Fwd... well i have owned it for 2 years i overheated it last summer and ended up replacing the head gasket but the friend i had do the work ####ed me over and the motor was already blown but i found a motor for 800$ from junk yard and im replacing all the gaskets and water pump and timing belt to the junk yard motor this will cost me 1,300$ with labor that includes all the gaskets and water pump and timing belt...my uncle is a mechanic and will do it... is it worth it to trust that the motor will be ok it has a 30 day warranty so should i do it or part ways with the car the body is mint no rust???????? need advice bad

That is really up to you.. It all depends on how your money is?? If you have another car?? If it was me I would keep the car and just rebuild the motor myself as much as I could do by myself. It would be better in the long run, cause you don't know how that other motor is going to run. It might break in 32 days. You never know what you get from the JUNK YARD.... MOST OF THE TIME IT'S JUNK..

Exactly what gets me nervous but wouldnt it be really expensive to rebuild it idk how to myself not much of a mechanic idk what to do its so aggravating i love the car so i really want to keep driving it and it used to be my daily driver and will be if i fix it

If you buy the engine from the junk yard you will have to replace all the belts, I would also go ahead and replace the gaskets and rebuild the head. BUT they are giving you a 30 day warranty, its a gamble but I would personally take it if the engine seems to be in good condition and has low mileage.

If it comes to it and you really do have to rebuild it look for a kit from ExtremePSI or shop around for one of good quality that meets your budget.

what do i have to do to rebuild the head??? sorry dont know to much :toobad:

New valves, springs, retainers, ect. How many miles does it have? Once you mount it up check the compression, if its good then you don't need to rebuild it. My main concern out of a junker engine is bent valves.

ummm idk miles but ill find out later today and my uncle said the will lie about miles just so u buy it so he said u cant always go by what they say and that will be the first thing i do is check compression LOL cause my motor now the compressions are extremely low like 80s 90s and 1 is over 100

Holy hell, that's pretty down there man. Before you get a brand new engine take the head off and check it, also check the headgasket. Hopefully its something that can easily be fixed instead of buying an entire engine. Yet again, if the short block is good having another one laying around doesn't hurt.

i already took head off i had warped it so i took it to machine shop shaved it down and changed head gasket did nothing still shitty compressions i overheated it really bad :toobad:

When you reinstalled it was it torqued down correctly and did you have the correct timing? You may have messed up some valves if you didn't.

It really come's down to the question of how soon you want your car running again. If you have the time for it, just rebuild the motor you already have and use the money on that. If not get the used one and make sure all the necessities are done to put it in the car and have it last a while. And in the mean time you can rebuild the motor that's down.

The timing was off at first but then it got fixed still low compressions

If the timing was off there's a chance you could have bent some valves, our valvetrain is extremely picky... Why 60k is not a suggestion, its a rule.

yea well thats what pisses me off is the shop i brought it to gave it to me with the timing off then my uncle fixed it and now like i said the engine is gone

What are the necessities that need to be done to make sure its okay?

It depends on what it needs, who does the work, and how much of the work you do yourself.

I have the rotating assembly installed in the short block, the head done, and then I put the rest together myself.

My builder charged me $260 to freshen a shortblock including the parts (rings & bearings). I got new SS valves on ebay for $100, another $100 for the head work, probably around $100 for gaskets. I buy a full gasket set cheap on ebay, then buy a felpro headgasket at a local parts store (ebay headgaskets are crap for decent power levels).

94 96 ECLIPSE TALON 2.0L 4G63 TURBO ENGINE JDM 4G63T: eBay Motors (item 270579132914 end time May-24-10 13:24:13 PDT)

Look on Ebay..they're on there all the time. The link above is not a rebuilt motor. A LOT of these guys will do better pricing if you do an "off ebay" transaction, because it saves them hella money on eBay fees... never hurts to ask

I dont like JDM, they are overpriced junk yard engines in my opinion. I agree with the guys saying rebuild your motor. You should be able to have a shop rebuild your short block for 1000 or less and you can get a rebuilt head off ebay for around 250. It may run you a few dollars more to go this route but in the long run you have a 0 mile engine. You never know what your gona get from a junk yard.
