Is it OK to use the large 1G oil filters on a 2G?

I just went to autozone to get an oil filter for my wife's 99 GS-T and I noticed that it called for a very small oil filter. I remember the one that I used for my 92 GSX was alot bigger. So I looked up a filter for a 92 and it was different. What's the deal with that? Is it OK to use the older/bigger style filter on a 2G?

I used a 1g on mine before. But I heard that it tends to fall off... I went back to the 2g small ones.

There can be issues with clearance on large downpipes, but otherwise there's no trouble.
