hey just doing some research on the dsmlink and regular data loggers and i have a few questions...i plan on getting a new turbo (with other engine work) this summer so i figured i should get some sort of logging device now so i can better understand the readings by time im ready for upgrades, so as i was looking through the forums i saw almost everybody was saying to get a dsmlink instead of a logger. my question is basically...how much of a -tuner- do i need to be for me to make the DSMLINK a necessity? i mean i dont plan on going to the track every weekend or anything and the car would still be a daily driver...so would a regular data logger be enough or would the DSMLINK be the best at any stage of tuning?

I suppose it depends on the size injectors, and turbo you plan on getting. If your going big I would suggest dsmlink. It is *really* easy to use and makes tuning really simple. My first tuning device was dsmlink. It is the _best_ for the money.

DSM link is around 600 dollars and you will want a Wideband O2 meter plus you will need a laptop. If you want to go with something cheaper since your not planning on making gobs of power you could get a SAFC2 and tune for knock or tune off of a wideband O2 meter.
DSM link looks soooo nice though, if you already have a laptop I think it would be worth it.

DSM link- $600
Zeitronix Wideband- $279(w/out display)
$400(w/display) http://www.zeitronix.com/order/order.htm
Laptop- $???

Or

Apexi SAFC2- $300
Zeitronix Wideband- $279(w/out display)
$400(w/display) http://www.zeitronix.com/order/order.htm

If you are still thinking about the Evo III 16G turbo, 660 injectors and MAF/MAFT combo then a SAFC and a logger from pocketlogger will be enough.

right i was still going with the evoIII...so a list of everything i need would be the data logger, safc, and the wide band? and a new ecu too?

I think that if you've used a palm logger and a DSM link you'd hands down never give up your DSMlink for the palm logger. DSMlink isn't just a logger, and it's way better than an SAFC is.

I was running an SAFC in my 95 and couldn't get it to idle very well at all. Let alone descent daily drivability. Switched to a DSMlink and once I set the global setting, it ran near perfect.

I think it's easily the best mod I've done.

...abso-fricking-lutely!!!

however...not to throw water on the DSMLink fire, but straight from their own manual...

"DSMLink is intended for the individual who already knows things like what injector pulse width means and how it relates to fuel supply and airflow during the tuning process. If you are not comfortable with these concepts, then DSMLink is not the product for you."

...that being said, if you intend on having your car for very long (and keep modding it) you will end up with one sooner or later ;)

You only need an e-prom ECU if you want to get DSMlink. Get an EGT gauge. You can tune with a logger and safc. Wideband is optional, so is DSMLink. You can tune just with the MAF/MAFT combo you are getting if you go with 550cc injectors (550ccs not recommended for the Evo3 turbo though).

I personally like this: http://www.zeitronix.com/Products/zt2/zt2.htm

Here's a good thread about tuning with a wideband: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=173035

Everyone starts out just wanting a 16g and 13's. I did, then I went high 13's on the T25 and now low 12's on the small 16g and I'm ready to step up to something bigger. DSMlink is an invaluable tool.

add 2-300 to that for a 95 EPROM ecu.

You can find them for much less than that if you look around.

I found one a while back (can't remember where) that I purchased for 80 dollars. I then subsequently moved and had no money to convert it over to DSMLink. Stupid women.

ECU worked just fine though.
