Is a 6 bolt thermostate housing different from a 7 bolt?

Ok so I got home today from work and wanted to finish polishing my thermostate housing on my 6 bolt and some how the bottom piece had a piece broken off.

question : can I put a 2g 7 bolt thermostate housing on my 6 bolt?

Ill be swaping my 7 bolt in my gsx with my 6 bolt and want to know if I can use the housing off my 7 bolt?

Get the 6 bolt 7 bolt thing out of your head. IT is a difference between 1g and 2g. IF you are using a 1g head (6 or 7 bolt) than you need a 1g thermostat housing and water pipe. IF you are using a 2g head than you can use either one.

Whoa! Back-up there folks. The OP has my head spinning with all the 6/7-bolt stuff, but I have both heads and both thermostat housings in my possession, so here we go:

2G Heads: Can use the 2G t-stat housing (duh) with the 2G water pipe. They can also use a 1G t-stat housing (in bolt-on fashion) if it is used with a 1G water pipe.

1G Heads: Can use the 1G thermostat housing (also duh) with the 1G water pipe. They CAN ALSO use a 2G t-stat housing with a 2G water pipe...BUT you have to make an adapter plate, which isn't very hard to do.

1.) I went to good ole' Home Depot and bought an aluminum kickplate for a door.

2.) Start-out by tracing the outline of the 2G housing and marking the four holes that mount it.

3.) Take a 1G t-stat housing gasket and align the two holes on the left (that are common between the 2 housings), then mark the 3rd hole from the 1G housing as well as the large center opening.

4.) Drill-out all the holes, BUT drill the 3rd/1G hole small enough for a round headed screw (noted in Step 6)...I used a Dremel with a small metal cutting wheel to do the main hole.

5.) Cut-out the whole plate that's shaped like the 2G housing...I used the Dremel w/ small metal cutting wheel for this as well. It was tedious, but not too bad.

6.) Use a stud that will sit flush in the middle hole, and drill and tap the center of it to accept a round headed screw (you want this to be low-profile, so it doesn't impede flow). I notched the end of the stud so I could install it with a flathead screwdriver.

7.) Apply RTV to the 1G head surface (for the housing).

8.) Temporarily bolt the adapter plate to the head using the left-most "common" bolts (or studs)...and use the round-headed screw to attach the plate to the 3rd/flush-studded hole in the 1G head.

9.) Remove "left-most" bolts/nuts and apply RTV to the 2G housing.

10.) Secure housing using the 2 "left-most" bolts.

11.) The front (right-side) 2 remaining bolts/holes are secured to the housing/plate and sandwiches them together by nutting them.

It took about an hour to do all of this.

Happy Modding!
