I have a Garrett t3/t4 that came with an internal wastegate. I put on a external and wanted to know what to do with the internal. I took off the wastegate arm so the flapper will open and close freely. Do I need to weld open the flapper or will the exhaust gases keep it open.

Where is your wastegate off of? If its off of the manifold, then you will need to weld the door shut. If it's like mine, and off of the 02 housing after the gate, then it will be fine like that and the gases will keep it open.

word... thanks a lot guys. It is on manifold so I got to get it welded shut. Is it easy to tell which way is open and closed, you never know about the exhaust guys...WTF <<< too much exhaust fumes

hahahaha.... is that what I asked? I think I asked is it easy to tell which way is open and which way is closed. How can I tell which is which.

hmmm......

there is this hole.... and it has a lid.

If the lid is OPEN, then stuff can come out.

If the lid is closed, Then the stuff is trapped.

Seriously though, He is asking this because the turbo is mounted on the car already, full exhaust is hooked up, and he doenst want to take it apart to look at the flapper and hole to tell.

Just remember, wastegate actuators use spring pressure to Hold the flapper closed. and they push out to open the gate.

Hold the wastegate actuator up to the turbo as close to in place as you can, and just visualize the actuator pushing out, and opening the wastegate, this will show you the direction of open versus closed.
