alright, here's the story...
driving down the street on wednesday night, cruising along at 45 when it car seems like it dies, RPMS drop to 0, and the check engine light comes on. Put the clutch in neutral, and still rolling at 45 I try to crank the engine and i hear it grind, so obviously its not dead, just barely idleing. Roll a few more seconds and put it in 2nd and pop the clutch and it comes back to life and i drive home.
Next day I go to the auto store, get the diagnostic comp and it says "Multiple cylinder misfires" is the only code. I buy new spark plugs and head home and swap em out. Car starts up fine the next few days and i drove for over 100 miles before saturday night when it happens again while driving on the interstate. I roll in neutral to the bottom of a hill and notice this time that the AF gauge is reading extremely lean, almost to the point of not reading on the gauge. The car is still running, still can move under its own power, but just barely... I limp it to the bar which is like 2 blocks away and try let it run like that in the parking lot for 5 mins while i check all the hoses, etc for leaks.. nothing. No change after 5 mins, leave it for 3 hours, come back and try to start it and its doing the same thing.
Come back the next morning with tools in hand, try to start it and it starts up fine and drive home perfectly. Today while driving to lunch it does the same thing.
so here are my thoughts/diagnosis...
- water in fuel
- fuel filter needs replaced (but wouldnt this have started over time and not so sudden?)
- fuel pump going out (but wouldnt this be either all or nothing? either fuel or no fuel?)
ANY other comments are appreciated before i dive in and change the fuel filter and purchase a new fuel pump. Anyway to check these parts?
thanks!
matt
