Hi,

This should be in a different area, but I can't post there yet, not up to 30 posts yet.

Note to site moderators: that kind of rule really encourages a bunch of "I have one too!" or "That rocks!" posts, which are not very useful...

Anyway, some questions regarding intercoolers, as applied to DSMs:

1) Does anyone have any hard data on either a) the actual cooling air-flow through a FMIC on a 1G, or b) input/output temperatures? I am trying to get an idea of the actual cooling air flow, compared to the theoretical area*speed flow rate. With no ducting and 1-2 radiators behind the IC, it seems likely that the actual air flow is not so high.

2) Has anyone tried using (2) stock SMIC units in parallel? With 2x the mass, 2x the heat exchanging area, 0.5x the linear flow speed, and 0.5x the flow restriction (even less at high flow rates) it seems that this would work very well for intermittent boost applications.

3) Has anyone mounted a serious fan ahead of the stock SMIC? I test-fitted a 4.5" EDF fan (for RC electric jets), which happens to fit pretty nicely in the factory SMIC intake ducting, and flows (my best guess) about 450 CFM at roughly 25 amps. The fan I used can take quite a bit of power (it is run up to about 4kW at higher voltages), but in a car, at ~13VDC, the amps get too high to really blast it hard. 450 CFM of cooling sets a max IC efficiency of about 50% given ~450 CFM through the engine, but the cooling air is available regardless of vehicle speed, and could be increased to about 900 CFM when the vehicle is moving, with a smarter motor controller (I think, I did not do the power math for that yet).

I guess it is pretty obvious that I am thinking of trying the dual-core, fan-cooled setup, I just wondered if anyone has already tried something similar, or has comments that might steer me away from this.

Thanks!
