Intake Manifold Removal

I've been having terrible luck with this TSi I picked up last week, and I want to get it running right. Found out that some of the vacuum lines weren't plugged in and I had a bad FPR electronic solenoid thing, so I jerry rigged that, but I noticed hissing near the throttle body and figured that was it, so I replaced the gaskets and still have the hissing. Its coming from underneath, so I assume its the intake manifold gasket. When I'm idling, the car just really wants to die, and it runs weird while I'm driving etc. I want to replace the gasket, but don't have much experience with this kind of stuff, and I also don't have much money. I just need some advice, what to remove, what to look out for, etc. Thank you!

Alright, thank you. I have, uhm, showed off the fact that its a boosted talon a bit, but never really went full throttle, but I get close sometimes when the motor wants to commit suicide, but never really got the RPMs anywhere near redline

another noob question. When I want to get to testing like past the throttle body, would I have to open it up or does a good amount of air get past it when its closed? (Still don't fully understand car vacuum systems)

You won't need to open the throttle body. The pressure will go past it.

If there is a leak past the throttle body, it will be immediately noticeable. Leaks at the intake manifold tend to be pretty big, like a vacuum port left open, a cracked up injector seal, the PCV line being rotted, or the brake booster line. Those leaks are usually loud, even just with the engine running.

OP: one easy way to have compressed air is to just get one of those portable 5 gallon tanks. Fill it up at the gas station for a $1 and you've got some air for your boost leak test (BLT).

And like they say above, forget the smoke test for these cars. The BLT will tell you all you need to know.

And the sooner you do it, the better things will get. A BLT and a tune of my ECU made for the biggest improvements in the way my car runs.

Alright. I found atleast one of the leaks with a piece of coolant hose and some soapy water. Its on the throttle body between the throttle body and intake manifold. I can put my finger over it and it quiets down. Gonna get some RTV or something similar from autozone and see if that helps

Just replaced the intake manifold gasket turns out the old one was installed BACKWARDS!! Replaced the plugs too, the old ones were autolites, put NGKs in there, still has an idle surge if I put the throttle closed switch on, but other than that, idles great! I can actually feel the pull of the turbo now too
