Alright guys. I have a 99 gsx.. and I've been wanting to launch it for quite some time.. only thing is.. I'm scared that Im going to BREAK something. Like launch to hard and transfer case... BOOM. How do you guys launch. Do you suggest just not doing it

If you are scared of breaking something then don't do it. It is inherently hard on every part of your drivetrain.

With that said when my car was around 300 AWHP I launched it countless times at the drag strip without anything more than killing clutches earlier than they should have died. In general I would set my dual stage rev limiter in ECMlink to about 5750 and floor it with the RPMs bouncing there and let out the clutch quickly but not just throw my foot off of it. You need to get the feel for doing it fast enough to be just on the edge of slipping the crap out of the clutch.

I still haven't gotten to play with the new setup yet but my guess is if I do the same with over 420 lb-ft of torque I will break something now, but we will see.

Never just dump the clutch, thats hard on any car as that what shocks the drivetrain but its harder on awd as they don't tend to slip the tires like a 2wd car will. If your just learning, start at a lower rpm & work you way up. Maybe start around 3500rpms, hold the gas down to hit this mark, start to slip the clutch out, as the clutch starts to grab & the car starts to roll, release the clutch the rest of the way quickly & mash the gas at the same time.

Being that you are stock I highly doubt anything would break as long as you launch correctly. As others have said rev it to around 4k and let off the clutch quickly but don't dump it.

Make sure you preload the drivetrain first... meaning slip a little then come to a stop, so everything is ready. If you just launch it without preloading anything it's a bigger intial shock to the drivetrain.

The first time is always th hardest but if you dont want to risk of breaking anything (since it is a 11 yea old car) dont do do it :thumb:

If your car is stock, you're probably not going to break anything....especially not the transfer case tailshaft. You'll fry the clutch long before gears scatter.

Actually I suggest doing it as often as possible....it's quite fun. ;)

Slip the clutch out like your just starting out normal bit slip it faster. If your scared you'll break something then don't launch it get used to revving the car to about 3400 and slipping out the clutch. then move to 4k and finally get launch control at 5k and you'll get a nice start but things will eventually wear and break. Such as the transfer case, diffs, clutches, and axles.

Usually it is the synchros that go bad first.

Wow apparently he doesnt know about sink-rows or give you enough credit to catch onto your sick sense of humor. Op at stock power levels your not gonna launch your gonna bog or slip the clutch so bad that your car will smell like pee. (or at least i wouldnt call it a launch)

I was afraid to do it at first and then I said screw it. It helped I wanted to show off infront of my buddies house with all my friends standing around. Alot of the parts on my car are new, rebuilt, or just recently looked at and thought to be ok. I've launched my car about 6-7 times now since then and so far so good. Its very addicting and very fun!!!! I recommend it atleast once. If parts are going to break then there going to break Its just a matter of when, where and how expensive.

I noticed everyone(well not everyone) mentioning setting up launch control on the ECMLink. What about us poor sod's that don't have ECM, any "rev limiters" out there that aren't using ECM??
Just curious as I'm building a car for the drag strip and eventually will maybe go to ECM, but with the budget going on new engine and clutch, plus all the other nice things for the track, I don't have $1000 spare for EPROM and ECM.
ALSO, it was said, that the the transfer case wouldn't give up at HP less than 300, which is comforting to know, but is that a general rule or pretty good numbers to take to the bank. I'm running a 4bolt LSD rearend with what will eventually be a 6 puck clutch on the stock transfer case and stock front diff'. I've heard horror stories of guys demolishing the center diff ( are they talking about the transfer case or something else), as I thought we only had 2 diff's front and rear and the transfer case was a gearbox of sorts that split the power for the axles. Just a little confused :confused:over the terminology some guys use and would like to have some solid facts as whether the "center diff/ transfer case" is going to hold up to launching on the strip.
Thanks for the info.

I suggest get used to it on the street and once you get the hang of it take her to the track. It is the best experience I had in my car so far, the grip is unbelievable in these cars at the strip. Besides if youre scared to break it just look at it this way, if you do then it gives you an excuse to upgrade your components to handle more launches and power. Good Luck!!

The first time I launched my car I was timing 0-60 and I launched it at 2500 and slipped the clutch and even doing a sissy launch my 0-60 was 5 seconds flat. I've since gotten a little more brave and launch it at 4,000 and just slip the clutch a little. Pretty much the best way to launch a car is to get a feel for it. I was scared to break stuff so I took it easy. You may bog it too, but even launching it at 3000 you will know when you do a good job. It's fun and addicting to say the least! :thumb:
