Hey guys, ive done some searches but not the answers i was looking for.

Im looking into buying a '97 TSi AWD in the next couple months if the guy indeed does sell it in my local area. Its pretty clean, 60k original miles on the stock 7-bolt. Its fairly modded, Evo 3 16g, 17psi with supporting mods, wally 255 fp, afpr dsmlink and aftermarket gauges. It has a shep stage 3 trans and an ACT clutch. Its in storage for the winter and hes only driven it 400 miles in the last 2 years. Hes looking for around $6k+ if he decides to sell. I am 19 and yes i am buying it with my own money.

Now im in love with 2g's and i am really afraid of crankwalk. I know its overrated and can happen on any given motor but i can't really say that since i didn't have any luck with my 1st tsi with a 7-bolt. Ever since then my parents are pushing me to buy a "normal" car.

Now my question is, i know '96 was the worst year for CW and 97-99 bolt's were better built, i wanted to know if id be taking a risk buying a 2g this low in miles, my parents would agree with the mileage but don't know the risk that comes with dsms and its hard to explain to them. After i bought my 1st TSi modded i pledged to never buy another modded car, but this one is tastefully modded.

I know pretty much what to check for, when making sure CW hasn't already occurred. Plus all of that other good stuff, i know a dsmwiseman whom has worked on the car and would check it out to make sure its good.

Sorry for the long post, but i dont feel like fetching out 6k and have motor build downtime just yet. I know 6k is worth it especially shifting a shep tranny. Thanks GUYS!!!!:hellyeah:

All engines have a controlled amount of crank end play (correct term for ''walk''). It' doesn't occur just, because your odometer has a certain number, and the boogie man isn't under your bed you can go to sleep now.

^ a. what he said
b. any vehicle on the face of the planet can crank walk, if your that worried 6 bolt swap
and last off 1gb ftw

86k miles and running a gt30R with no signs of the crank walking.:) I would not worry about it to much. before you DO buy it, i would get under the car and check it for any walking. if you think there is excessive crank movement, there's your answer.

Just stay away from those crazy pointless ACT 2900 clutches and the thing will last.

i heard if you disconnect the clutch petal switch it helps, not sure why but something to do with not having to push in the clutch in when you start it.

I had a 96GSX with over 100k miles and no crankwalk. I also frequently maintained it and didnt beat the death out of it

Yeah i did that in my 95. Reason is, your not moving and it puts stress on the thrust bearing because there is a dry spot and oil isn't touching it. So you can start it right up, with less stress on the thrust bearing.

Yeah its a clean well maintained dsm. The only problems he had was when the tranny went, thus gave him an excuse to throw in that sick shep trans. I also know the guy who did most the work on the car so i will be talking to him just to make sure its all good.

Thanks guys i really appreciate your posts.

well i will tell you this much. you have an unmolested 60k mile eclipse that you can buy... if you are worried about crankwalk take it from me. i have beat the piss outta mine for the last 4 years. modifying it and racing and all that fun stuff. i have put over 80k on my car since i bought it. it now currently has like 215k on it. stock motor. everything... pushed it with a 16g for about 50k miles and then a 20g for about 20k.... i have only had little minor maintenance problems that i fixed. i have taken very good care of my car maintenance-wise. i look under the hood and all round the car at least once a week and do all the preventative maintenance. , but i do beat the piss outta it! how could you not with the setups i have run? LOL. my car is having issues right now. i say issues ### i have no time to diagnose it right now... but it has NOTHING to do with crankwalk. i think its something along the lines of... it has 215k on it... and sh!t happens. so if that is your worry, then steal it out from under the guy. hard to find those cars in good condition and low miles like that! oh and one key thing is.. when something goes wrong or seems kinda funny with the car stop driving it and fix it. ask us what may be wrong or how to fix it.don't continue driving it hoping it will go away like some do. then you will have serious problems. and don't let a mechanic touch your car unless you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO!

just take care of it.

goodluck man!

Thanks brah, this one is tastefully modded. I just don't want to fetch out 6k and have another broke down dsm in my driveway a week later. Lmao when i had my 95 TSi my parents were about to have it towed away.

hahahaha thats all he was thinking im sure and i took out that stupid plastic piece that makes it whistle so its just a louder psssh noise YouTube - hks super sqv (sequential blow off valve) sound sounds like the first of the 3 now :thumb: alot better

Even when mine was vented to atmosphere it did not sound like that, but I have the older version.
OP, just buy it. I have a 2gb with 144k miles and did not have C.W. Always worked great. The valve guides did not last too long though.

Crankwalk is overrated. Not all dsm suffered from it. It's all luck, if it happens it happens, if not, it'll happen later down the road, or in most cases, it won't happen at all.
If it's running just drive it and don't stress it. Have fun.
