Ok... so I did some maintenance yesterday including changing my transmission fluid to synchromesh, but when I drained my old fluid I only got out prob 16 ounces. I wasnt happy about this, but seeing I just bought the car I chocked it up to the old owner. I went to put in the Synchromesh and I thought I was going to get in over 2 quarts... but even before I got in one quart it started coming out the top hole. I was confused and thought maybe I was putting it in too fast, so i slowed the flow down, but couldnt get any more in. It certainly shifts better already, but I am confused as to why I couldnt get enough in, what this means and how to remedy this problem. Any advice would be appreciated.

An AWD tranny should take roughly almost 3 quarts when completely drained. Are you sure that you have drained the gearbox through the proper orfice? It should be a 24mm plug and slightly above it there should be a 17mm fill hole. Im assuming the vehicle was on level ground? Sometimes when im filling it seems as if it creates pressure and blows it back out, just go really slow with it. Like I said, you should get almost 3 quarts on a drained tranny.

seriously iam thinking it wasnt on a level surface when you were draining it and refilling it.. try again.. it should be almost 3 like stated above.. theres a drain hole and a refill hole above a which is a little plug...

What happens if you fill it up to where its just about coming out of the hole? Is it bad to have that much in there? I have a pretty slow leak coming from one of my axle seals so is it ok to fill it up to the top till i get that fixed? Sorry to jack the thread, but what the hell. :p

you should fill it up to the point to where thats occuring.. thats fine.. theres nothing wrong with having that much in there...

OK... I am not very good at mechanics, but i think i drained it through the correct hole because before I went to fill it i ran some fluid through to make sure that I drained the right thing. It was not level when i did it, i had it jacked up... would that really account for the problem? it seemed like i drained it through a large bolt towards what would be the back of the trans and filled it on what seemed like it was the front of the trans. maybe i drained the wrong thing and filled something else with trans fluid. Yikes! i guess i can try to get it in even slower, but it seemed like it just kept blowing out.

Ok so I'm pretty sure that I replaced my transfer case fluid with synchromesh. How bad is that? especially now that I have driven on it for a week and cant put the correct stuff in until wednesday?
