I was taking my car this afternoon to get inspected and while pulling the insurance and registration out of the glove compartment, I noticed a brown-ish colored wire. I pulled on it a bit and could feel something stuck. I was able to pry the back of the cover to get it out and it looks like a serial cable, very similar to this:

It doesn't appear to be one that is setup for a Palm or handheld, but can't be 100% sure. Is there anyway to tell if this is DSMLink or some other engine management setup?

It's an old cable..The new ones have a usb connection..Hook it up to your laptop, and run tunerpro..Nice find..

Scratch that..It looks like a palm cable that I have sitting in a box..It does not hook up to a laptop..Because it's a male end not female..

Looks like a palm or handheld one. If it was link it would had an obd connector one end and the other a USB with and about 6 in from the USB side is a lil block box with a green led that says ecmlink on it.

It doesnt pull out very far, so my hopes of it being a laptop cable are diminishing :(

Is it worth getting an old palm pilot and hooking it up? worst case would be it doesnt work and im out $100, but if it does, would be pretty useful... right?

It would be very useful to use as a logger for now..If you can find a cheap palm go for it..Or you can try to find an adapter that will hook into your laptop, and use palm from there..But that is a little excessive..But if it's cheaper, it's not the worst solution..

You only need a couple feet to hook into a laptop, the obd port is under the steering wheel, and would really only need to reach to the passenger seat..

Worth it give it a shot. If it doesnt work you can probably sell the palm on here or even back on CL. too me thats what it looks like, but I guess it could be something else? try it on your laptop maybe, if it is short and coming from the glovebox then I would assume it was for a Palm or similar and they had it mounted right there by the heater controls or something.

It looks like the same cable I have sitting in a box, which after some searching I found out its a palm cable..But mine has the other peice, the one that hooks into the palm, from that male end..

That is..That's the cable that wil hook into your laptop..

I wish I would have known about this cable a year or two ago..LOL

Haha, i have that exact cable as the op. My old laptop actually had a plug for that. The new laptop didnt so had to get the keyspan. Theres also something weird about the adapters. It seem only the "keyspan" ones work. The cheap ones from radio shack wont work.

The cable is like 6ft long. Plugs in under the in under the driver side dash on the floor. It reaches to the glove box pretty easy while plugged in.

thats the exact cable i have for my dsmlink v2.5 but yes you need the keyspan to hook up unless you have a really old computer with the serial port.
