bolt little set up. I know the bracket connects to the area just to the upper right of the powersteering pulley, and then you put the longer bolt with the little T piece through one end, then you have a screw that goes through the T piece and the bracket and locks into the alternator. My problem is the screw that goes through that and should lock into the alternator is to short! When I pulled my motor apart I labeled it all but I don't remember how this part connects exactly. Doesn't the screw/little T piece go towards the outside of the motor? If I flip it around, the screw slides through and will lock into the alternator but then the tension bolt is on the wrong side of the bracket it locks into. What am I mixing up here? Thanks

hope this helps

hey i tried it was no problem, but tonight i did look at mine (its a 91) and yes you are right it does go towards the out side of the engine (the head of the bolt towards the the dirvers fender)

i dont think you are mixing anything up, it sounds right to me, i just replaced my alternator for the first time (on any car) and for a bit i had the same problem, try locking the tensioner bolt in (the long one), if its two short just back it off until it fits, then try putting in the srcrew for the barcket, if that still dosent work, ry just using a longer srew...i dont think it should affect anything in a bad way, it just needs to be tight right?

let me know how you do.... on and sorry about the manual pic, my digi is screwed and its the only way i could get you a pic, unless you figure out the problem (again let me know how you do) i will do my best to get you a real pic of the part! cheers!

Just doesn't make sense, but thanks for the help, let me take a digi pic and post my problem....the screw that is sliding through the bracket isn't even getting close to the alternator, and this was the screw I took out so something has to be wrong. Also is the right mounting spot for the top side of the bracket right by the power steering pump pulley? Thanks again

In the second pic, what is this part? Anyone know?

Everything looks fine to me as well. Pivot the alternator up and down to get the side bolt in first but dont tighten it al the way.

and attach the side bolt it puts the bracket at a really bad angle, it should be smooth as far as i can tell, let me try that and see. With the pivot bolt on bottom locked in, the alternator moves up and down, not side to side, i have to push the bracket off to the side to make it connect....hm...something is wrong here, just dunno what...let me try that...Thanks I'll let you guys know.

Maybe you can actually see it here - this pic is taken with the brace locked down and it as lcose as it'll get, i'm like 1/3 of an inch off still...

Could your problem be that you don't have the alt. bracket attached to the right place? It should be under the water pump bolt (65mm long) that is closest to the front. And the bolt that goes into the alt. should be 40mm long. Here's a pic of the tensioner attached to the alt. just below the PS pulley (on my 99 GST - yours should be same).

The brace actually connects to a water pump bolt? I thought it connected to this other spot in the pic...it wont fit anywhere else, and it it was UNDER the water pump bolt wouldn't that be quite a bit of a pain to take off/adjust?

Ok perhaps it's different on a 1g. I have a 2g (and 99 Mitsu manual) and on it the alt brace is on a water pump bolt so I thought I'd mention it thinking yours was the same. But it looks like yours could be different. Shouldn't the adjusting slot on your brace be more parallel to the alt belt though for it to be effective? Here's a pic of my brace attaching to the water pump bolt (99 GST) (also my brace goes behind the PS pump pulley):

can anyone with a 1g confirm that the brace DOES or does NOT attach to a waterpump bolt or if it attaches to the spot I have mine attached to? Thanks all for the help!

The small bracket in the bottom of reply #5. It bolts from the stud which you had the alt. bracket and the timing belt side motor mount.

I'll check that when I get home, I guess it can only go so far, it has to connect to something close to it. You said timing belt mount? What is that?

the bolt here that holds the alt tensioner bracket to the waterpump?? Can someone give me the specs on this bolt, mainly how long is it? It is 8mm threads x 65 mm thread length, 12mm head, but what about the length of the bolt? Anyone have their water pump off the car that can measure this for me?

Thanks!

I thought mitsu said the THREAD length was 65 mm, so I didnt know how long the bolt itself should be, but it is 65mm for the whole bolt. I had to go to a bolt supply place for one, Mitsu doesnt stock them, of course they dont....we'll see if i can start it up tonight....
