i was goin down the highway at about 70-75 when i started hearing the loud clanking noise and then all of a sudden the car started to slow down when i still had my foot on the gas. so i got off at the next exit which was like 500 feet from me. when i got to the end i stopped and the car just died.

i popped the hood and saw it was smoking. since i dont have a temp gauge on my RS i guessed it was overheated. i checked for oil leakage after the tow truck came because i was sitting for a bit and there was nothing on the ground. i was lookin around and then i notice this rubber hose piece that is covering the top radiator hose. i take that off and notice there is a slash in the top radiator hose and its spewing steam. i tried starting the car a few times after a while of waiting for it to cool but i got nothing. acted like it had a dead battery.

my guess is that some asshole didnt fix it right in the first place and just covered the hole with another peice of hose instead of replacing it and could the alternator be an issue? i am gonna replace the hose after work and refill the radiator and try her again. is there anything else to try or any other comments as to what went wrong?

thanks

well, is there coolent in it? My guess would be since the hose has been cut and there was steam, it over heated. Perhapes you may be lucky and nothing serious broke.

Try turning over the engine by hand by turning the crank pully by hand to see if the engine seized.

ill give that a shot if just replacing the hose and filling it with coolant doenst work. the only place the steams was coming from ALOT was that particular hose with the cut in it. while i was driving it i tried to ignore the loud clanking and listen to the engine rpm itself to see if there was any odd noise there and there wasnt any so it "felt" like the engine was reving correctly aside from the clanking.

i would take it to a shop and make sure nothing else major happened. Check and make sure your radiator is good, and if it heated up enough you might need a headgasket. just my .02 :dsm:

if it was spewing steam then maybe it messed one of the sensors? i cant remember which, maybe the cam angle sensor. the same thing that happens to some when they wash their engines. cuz i know they say to let the engine dry even if you cover it cuz the steam will get in and wreck it = no start

Enjoy your new motor.
well on that happy note from everyones favorite moderator i am done with this. ill take everone else's non-condescending advice and go with what they suggested since is more they seem to have hope that the motor isnt completely FCUKED UP just yet.

guys...chill out...dude theres a slim chance u did anything major....if theres steam and a CUT in the radiator hose then coolant has leaked out enough to where u overheated or the thermostat stuck......defiant (like usual) is wrong..u wont need a new motor.....hasnt anybody here ever had a car that overheats in the summer??? ur not gonna blow nething up
ull either need a new headgasket, thermostat, or new hosing...or all of the above

I tend to agree with Defiant. That "loud clanking noise" may very well have been a toasted rod bearing or other serious internal damage. Heat is the ultimate enemy of a combustion engine and it sounds as though blaindsmith's engine saw some deadly temps. Hopefully it is nothing serious, but if I were a betting man....

Your logic is as flawed as the interaction you share with a dictionary. If you have a problem with a mod, take it to Ludachris via PMs.

Well i faced the truth that the engine is no more.
I want to apologize to anyone i went off on in this thread because i was a little pissed about the whole thing. This is the first time I've had to deal with a seized engine of any car.

So Defiant I'm sorry dude, you are right and you are god which is why you are a moderator LOL.

soooo, with all that said where to go from here???

I have an dead automatic RS. do i bother making this a respectable car that it was before by doin things right for a turbo or just go out and gank a used non-turbo engine again from the junkyard?

It's an auto rs. Not to be rude but it is the slowest form of an eclipse you can get. Honestly what you should do is go find the engine you need (junkyard) and have it installed or install it yourself. Then find you a turbo'd dsm and start on that platform rather than trying to make your car fast.

Ditto.

You can't polish a turd.

yeah i know i wasnt very knowledgable about the cars when it came to buying it. lesson learned RESEARCH FIRST! anyway ill just get a used shortblock or engine..whatever i need or find. if anyone has anyone they know that have ones for sale let me know. i appreciate it.

let me be the first to say.....
<-------Pwn3D...Hard...Core... :p (talking bout the statement i made..not ur motor  that was owned too)
no hard feelings mods...my view of how defiant handles his helpful advice led me astray...my views have stayed the same but i owe Defiant an apology  ..sorry bro :D

btw...dude sorry to hear bout ur engine...maybe its for the best...(*cough*Turbo*cough* :shhh: )

Fiddle. It's just the web, and it's not easy to type an inflection. I am brusque on the not-too-rare occasion, and for those manifold times I, too, owe apologies.

Yours is whole-heartedly accepted, with like kind in return.

It's okay. Many of us here know the feeling. It's shit on a stick, with nuts.
so defiant im sorry dude, you are right
Well, an infinite number of monkeys on an infinite number of typewriters...
and you are god
Hm. Interesting conundrum for an atheist. Or is it two piers? er, a pair of docks. er, paradox.
which is why you are a moderator LOL.
Actually, I was drafted. They needed ballast on this end of the boat.
soooo with all that said where to go from here???
Those pictures are bad. I'd go with a used motor.

Sorry about your engine, and I apologize for being rude about it.

Group hug! Group hug! Group hug! Grope hog! :barf:

here are some pics of the first few hours of the disassembly.

I suspect that the person you bought your eclipse from wasn't a big fan of frequent oil changes and may have had a habit of running the engine while the oil level was low. Notice the carbon build up on some of the lobes of the camshafts as well as the carbon and excessive varnish on the inside of the valve cover. I suspect that that your engine saw some very high temps.
I think you may find more extensive damage in the bottom half of the engine (crankshaft and bearings specifically). Also, you may wish to check out the head gasket and cooling system for additional clues as to what went wrong.
So, you blew an engine! Welcome to the club! Learn from it, laugh about it and chalk it up to experience.

dun dun dun...

and so so the hunt begind for a used engine there shall be a happy ending...someday...

well i am off to get my motorcycle license so i can ride more toys LOL. lata guys and thanks for everyones help. if anyone has any info on where to get a used engine let me know. i am going to be looking around the junkyards and such where i am.

and im out...
