Ok, I finally got a DSM. After lurking around this forum for half a year and watching, I think I got a good deal.

1996 Eclipse GSX M/T
123k miles, Red paint, AC, Spoiler, Cruise, Dunno if I have ABS yet, but I think I recall seeing a sticker...

Pros- 3" catback, Cold Air Intake, BOV, MBC, "pretty" red vacuum lines;), and a nice kenwood deck with pioneer speakers. Oh, and it sounds pretty nice...

Cons- FRIED clutch, can't get it in reverse, rear and driver 1/4 glass gone. Lots of key marks... (this guy must have been popular, seemed nice though...)

All said and done, he was asking $2500, I gave him $1600. I also spent about $150 for gas and trailer.

I just traded a 93 taurus with a blown tranny for the 1/4 glass (I think I got the better deal there ;) )

I am about to tear into the tranny. I figure get it out and we'll see what the deal is. I hope to keep you guys updated.

And a tear in the rear seat... in case anyone wanted to know...;)

Make sure to also do all the other basic tune-ups before you really drive it. Also, what type of clutch setup are you going with?

That's a very good deal, especially when you can do all the work yourself. GSX's are hard to find these days, unless you pay a small fortune.

For sure man great find just make sure if you rebuild the tranny go with double snycros... I regret not doin it everytime I drive mine hard :( and the evo 5th gear upgrade is awsome if your gonna daily drive it down the highway it dropped my rpms about 400 rpms maybe more. But good luck with the car and take care of her!

sweet deal!!! you probably could of got more money if you scrapped your ford.

Make sure like some one said get all the tune up stuff done. like timing belt if that snaps your in to spend some money.

Sweet man! I think that might actually beat my deal

Although...missing glass is never fun...or cheap

great deal try to check for crank movement before you invest alot of money into it if you catch it early you will save alot of money. I made that mistake before

Ok, the tranny is out... There is a lot of junk everywhere. That thing was fried...

To answer some questions other posters asked (and add some of my own)

I haven't done a tune up yet, but plan on it. How long does a timing belt take? (I could look up shop hours, but figured someone would know off the top of their head)

I have no clue what clutch setup I was going for. I want it shipped quick and it needs to hold up to 300hp. I think that this one might have fried because he didn't put a good enough one in. (I think it has been changed before, some of those bolts came off easier than they should have it they've never been removed.)

I tried scrapping the Ford, but after having it dead in my shop driveway for 3 months, I wanted it gone. (But I kept the battery and new muffler)

Double synchros in all gears? I was only planning on second... I found a kit that sold all of the bearings and synchros for $350. Mitsubishi parts. I thought that sounded good. Otherwise I'd be going with TRE. I guess the tranny shifted ok other than a "no go" into reverse. Any thoughts or advice are welcome...

All I need for the glass now is the rear. I've done it before on an older car, so this will be interesting. I hope t go pull it at a pull-a-part and get it cheap. I also just broke on of the wiper fluid motors while vacuuming out the truck. So another pulled part needed.

How do I check for crank movement? (I'm going to search that as soon as I post this...)

Thanks guys, I'll keep the updates coming. Maybe even a tutorial on key mark removals. I have had some good success.

Double syncro second for sure. I guess about the rest of them that all depends on what you wanna do with it and how high of rpms your gonna run but from the sounds of around 300 hp double 2nd only should be good. You can get them at tre like you said or www.jackstransmissions.com Jacks price on the double syncros are like $150 i believe. If you take your tranny apart look at your vicous coupler. Being a blue color that means its gotten hot and needs replaced. Also take a close look at your center diff. those are just couple of big problem areas I have found. As far as timming belt I think last time I looked on AllData it was like 2 hours for a replacement but thats on 1G. Well good luck on the car man...

I believe the double syncro'd 2nd gear started in 93 and lasted through 99. Of course, I have been known to be wrong from time to time. :D

That's funny... I think you made your first comment the same time I was was writing my second to most recent. So when I commented on the 2nd gear synchro I jumped past your post because I figured everything above mine I already read... That's funny...

So, does anyone disagree with this?

Also, is Mitsubishi the only place to go for shims for the tranny?

I thought you said your tranny was fried [ read your post wrong] and if you were going to go for rebuild I believe they have double synchro upgrades on some sites like jacks transmisisons.

Im not sure im actually running a awd tranny out of a 96 tsi. Well so I was told and when i tore it apart it didnt have any doulbe syncros in it. I know its a 2g ### it has the extra mount but whos to say that the internals werent changed.

SHEP TRANNY!!!! a stage 3 rebuild is only like $1925.xx....its rated for 400-600hp. trust me when i say its not going to break. a estimate from the dealer for a stock tranny is $3700 or so. so dont waste your time and move up in the world
