Ok, about done with my rebuild... I followed all the instructions that came in my gates kit. Got it timed perfectly and belt perfectly tensioned, now when I turn the crank by hand the belt walks out maybe a 1/5 to 1/4 of an inch. I did a little more research on the web and it seems that most people cut the hole out on the inner timing cover like shown here 420A Mechanical Conversion Kit Images. Should I take the timing belt back off and cut that part of the cover out? Or is it something that is normal and will straighten out as it runs? Honestly, I don't want to take it back off but can, it's just the fact that i'm doing it myself and struggled big time to get it on.

yes, cut the inner t-belt cover. I thought i would be ok leaving mine without cutting and about 100 miles on the tac and i noticed some wear starting to develop on the out side of the belt. i fixed the problem before it got worse, also just to be safe i replaced the belt( I get a little paranoid).

Most peope? More like Everyone.. Since you HAVE to cut the hole out for it to sit flush.. Thats ###### the issue. Fix it and report back :)

Hi, this thread is so old the link to the picture doesn’t seem to work. Could anyone post another pic where this hole needs to be cut. I am having the same issue on my engine. Thanks
