How to test master and slave cylinder (disconnected)

Quick question - I have the engine and transmission removed, but the master and slave cylinders have been in the car for the last 5-7ish years. Is there anyway to test them manually, or should I just replace them?

Not really a good test other than pulling the boots back to see if they are leaking fluid.

best way would be to plug the holes, push the rod in and see if any fluid is leaking past the seals. That's all that you can really do without specialty tools im guessing.
