So I bought a car from this guy for $1000. The car had a blown headgasket and a few other problems and he was going to part it out but I concluded it is to easy to fix and to nice to want to part out. I bought it from the guy with no title and he told me he didn't have one. I had the VIN and the plates ran and the car is not stolen but from everything the guy told me he found the car abondoned. I was just wondering anyone knows if it is even possible to register/get a title for this car through DMV and how I would go about doing something like this?

You can't register a car without a title. At least not from my knowledge. I think the best you can do is try to find the title through the DMV. You may be able to get a copy, but then again, the legit owner, who's name is on the title might have to get it for you.

same boat as me my friend.
I should be getting my title in about 3 weeks.

Call DMV/Secretary of State and ask about bonded titles.
In Illinois, I had to have an appraisal done, a form singed by the seller saying that he sold me the car, and another form of technical stuff about the car.
Again, in Illinois, you post up one and a half times the appraised value of the car to the state DMV/Secretary of State. They run it through, do a VIN check on their own.
If it clears, you get a title.
Again in Illinois it is a $25 fee on top of the normal title fees.

I got my car appraised at $30 (because one I knew the appraiser and he is a family friend) so this is costing me about $45 for the car value, and 35 for the title fee.

And if anyone ever says, hey that is my car, they get the appraisal fee/value money and you keep the car.

Really... One time I heard these guys talking about this guy who used to pick up abandoned cars on the side of the highway and somehow he could get a title through DMV if no one claimed the car for 30 days. I do not know if this is true or not but it was worth mentioning. Otherwise I am not quite sure what I will do...

Abandoned cars are usually issued junk titles. Once a car is issued that title, it can never be retitled for road use. Not to be confused with a salvage title.

couldnt u get like a hotrod status that you built the car outta other vechicles parts or somethin, just a thought cause my buddy runs his fully built S13 SR20 in hotrod status..

If he doesn't have the original title, is the car under his name or the former owner? If it's under the name of the person that your buying it from, then all you have to do is a paperless title transfer. If it is under the former owner's name, you might have to track down him/her and get a release of ownership form signed. Good Luck:thumb:

In PA, the CURRENT owner of the car is the only one who can get a new title. He/she can then transfer it to the new owner.
As for abandoned cars, you must first report the car as abandoned, they come out and put a paper on it that says the owner has 30 days to move the car. They also do everything they can to find the owner and let them know the car must be moved. If after 30 days they do not respond/move it, you can get a title for it, but the car will never be able to be driven on the road again. I forget what the title is called. You probably can work around it some how and get it licenced again, but that it is hard to do to say the least.
Think about it. If ANYONE could go get a title for a car, you know how easy it would be to steal cars?

That's the junk title I was talking about. In New Jersey, only police and local municipalities can have junk titles issued to them. They turn around and then sell it off to a junkyard.

But like Defiant said, check your state laws.

Anyone can steal a car... and if they know people can get the title swapped over.
A honest person would go throught he propper channels (DMV/Sec of State) and can get the title legally, and fully.
Once that is done it can be licensed and put back on the road.

Like I said first, call DMV and ask about bonded titles, or explain the situation to them.
They may point you to the State police, and or Secretary of State for assitance.
In either case they will most likely ask for the VIN, so have it handy. If it is not reported as stolen, they will tell you what you can do and inform you of any waiting period that you may have to do.
