I did find a post discussion of a 14b internal waste to external , but I would like to know if anyone has done it? There's a possibility of me going external in the future and because I already have an external dump Downpipe with a flange setup. I dont need a new turbo right now. Just wanna know if anyone's done it and will putting back together an internal be a problem?

The easiest way to go external and still have the option to go back is to tack weld the flapper door shut and run the gate of the exhaust manifold. Just have a friend or shop weld the flapper arm to the housing, this will seal the wastegate passage. Then just run your gate setup before the turbo. If you ever need to go back, grind the tack weld and re-install the wastegate.

Many people have done this on a 16g/20g style turbom or bigger, to avoid boost creep yet give the option to go back to an internal gate.

I think the easier(and maybe better) way would be off the o2 housing. Is your DP an o2 elim with a flange for a wastegate? If so just take the flapper itself off, and remove the internal WG, bolt up your DP and gate and you're good to go.

How is that easier? (Or better?)

Not only did Nate explain how to do it on the car, without removing anything; but how to reverse it if needed.

Look in my profile, I ran the 14b externally gated with an HKS unit off the #1 runner.

Although in the picture it has a GT32 on the car, but same idea.

good info Nate, but my flange is on my O2 elim pipe. I thought about taking apart internal and just addon ext. gate, but I would like to know if taking internal gate apart and putting it back together will cause any problems or inefficiency? Like say breaking glass and gluing it back together. AInt gonna work. Know what I mean?

its its already internal gated you can technically just do a manifold mounted gate and leave no pressure source to the internal one, not sure how much boost it will hold but i will know soon

Even if you left the stock actuator on, you will want to tack it so that it's 100% sealed. You don't want your stock actuator opening slightly above 10 pounds and your boost falling off. You have the right idea, but the stock gate will open and close as the boost increases.

Mr. Tao,

If you cleanly remove the actuator arm on the "outside" of the turbine housing, the flapper and it's arm will come out easily and everything will still be square. If this is done slowly and square, you can reweld the arm and it's retaining cap back on if you wish to go back to the stock internal gate.

That way is good, but in order for it to be worthwhile you must port the wastegate hole out as much as possible so the maximum exhaust flows through it.

dude can you please get me more pictures of this hks wastegate on the manifold? I have the same wastegate and am planning to run it with my 16g, I just wonder how well it fits in the engine bay. Thanks.

Well I basically mounted the manifold, used a carbide-bit to drill the 40mm hole in the number#1 runner on the flattest spot in the front.

I had a piece of stubby 3/8" thickness pipe, about 40mm around, and 1 1/2" long.

I basically just tack-welded the stubby piece with the wastgate flange pointed the way I wanted untill the hood closed, rad clearence etc.

I have to say, the welds look nasty cause I only had some .035 wire, using argon/o2 mix shielding gas MIG process.

I would suggest that you ARC weld it with a rod with high-nickle content on the stock manifold.

I Sold the car recently for a GVR4, so I don't have any more pics of the setup on a 1g.

I will get some pics up of the manifold and wastegate not mounted on the car.

Good luck!
