Team,

I know that everyone with an early 2G is having incredible times finding shifter cables since Mitsubishi discontinued them, so I took a chance and ordered a set of 1999 cables for my very early build (3/94) 1995 Talon. Here's the long and the short of it:

1. The cables WILL fit, although from first glance, they look like they won't. See below picture to see what I'm talking about. The lengths of the cables are the same, but the angles are not. This will work itself out when you put the cables in the car.

2. The fitment of the new cables is VERY tight. There is a new piece in the 99 cables to keep the angle of the cable correct that the '95 cables do not have.

Installation instructions:

First, get yourself some skateboard bearings, and press them into the new cables using a proper vise or press. You'll be very glad you did this.

Next, remove the battery, battery tray, and intake from the engine. Remove the cotter pins from the existing cables, and place them out of the way.

Remove the center console, radio, and ECU. It may also be necessary to remove the main relay when installing the new cables as well. I removed the passenger side floor panel for easier access.

Remove the cotter pins from the shifter cables to the shifter. Keep track of the plastic insert bushing on the uppermost mount (it is usually the black mount).

Using a 10mm socket, remove the two bolts that connect the shifter cables to the firewall.

CAREFULLY pull the cables through the firewall. It would be easier to have two people do this, as they can get hung up on a lot of things.

Installation is reverse of the removal. Remember that when you put the cables on the car, the WHITE bushing goes on the HORIZONTAL shifter connection. This is the lower of the two. The vertical bushing needs to have the plastic bushing you removed from the old cables inserted into it to fit.

Enjoy the new cables. I got mine from Bob at Forced Induction Motorsports in S. Windsor, Ct.

Good luck, and I hope this helps some folks out. The shifting of the 99 cables is most definately better than that of the early 2G's.

Thanks,
Matt
