I am looking to buy a 2g Eclipse GSX! Im curious as to how strong the bottom end actually is. How much boost can it hold. I was thinking on the turbo upgrade to go with a 20g or maybe something a little bit larger... But does this mean I am going to need to get forged rods or different pistons... new bearings... The here are the questions I am asking...

How strong is the bottom end actually?
What would you suggest I do to beef it up?
How much boost do you think it could handle?

And then any other input or information you think is needed to make me learn.

Thanks!

This is totally dependent on the engine and noone on here can answer this for you about your car.

That said the bottom end has come apart at stock levels and some have made it to 400+hp. Just depends on how lucky you are.

I would be inclined to agree. My personal approach to building ANY engine is prepare for the worst. Typicaly, dropping in forged pistons and prepping the stock rods (shotpeen and polish the beams) will be plenty for most people. Aftermarket rods (I'm in favor of Pauter, myself) are added insurance; as you start making more power you won't have to think twice aout the engine standing up to it. Build it right, build it once. That's just me though :thumb:

I guess I didn't really answer your question, sorry about that :p

no u guys answered it in more than enough ways. I was just tyring to maybe get a "guesstimate" on what these motors can uphold. Thanks!

The theory is the 7-bolt (2nd gen motor) can hold upwards of 400, and the 6-bolt (90-91) can hold upwards of 450.

something else that i've saw to a 350+ HP GSX is the transfer case blow out in a race. you have to do a bit more modding then just the engine. his car was fubared because the transfer case blew, shot his car 6 feet into the air and parts everywhere. poor kid (poor parents who paid for the kids car really)

There is no way in hell a transfer case breaking shot his car 6 feet into the air....

If the frontend of that driveshaft comes out of the transfer case and catches on the ground, you can bet your ass that your car is going to be playing leapfrog. I've seen people die in right front of me because their tailshaft broke and the front of their driveshaft planted into the concrete, flipping the truck over on its top.

like nuggit said. 1. drive shaft break. 2. drive shaft dig into ground. 3. drive shaft go up bumhole. 4. driveshaft launch car 6 feet into air.

Ok guys... off subject in the first place... i asked how strong the bottom end was not what else i need to mod around the car... only a complete dumbass wouldnt do suspension mods and tranny mods... so therefor the thread is done... i know my answer now go make a new post about a 6 foot leap frog due to a transfer case... thanks.

mooley relax a little here I am making a point.

I was hoping somebody would bring up the drive shaft catching the ground while moving. The problem is this was not stated in the original post. We are currently trying to get people to post whole thoughts and statements when posting for the benefit of everybody. You have probably already noticed this move ;)

The moral is please post the entire thought or happening. Remember there are people reading this who barely know what a transfer case is. They might read that post about it breaking and shooting the car 6 feet in the air and really believe it blew the car 6 feet in the air. Said person then tells this to others and in the end people start thinking tuners spreads unrealistic information.

I'm sure you've never met anyone else that could say that. OMG
Just curious, what kind of truck was this, where, what time, etc?

1997, my buddy ronald.. he had a '68 c100 longbed chevy truck that he dropped in a hopped up 400 bolted to a 3 speed glide. I was standing a little past the 330' marker at the track, and ron was doing his first ever run in his newly built truck. He hit the green, and as soon as his glide shifted into second, the input side of his ujoint siezed up in the tailshaft, snapped, and his driveshaft dug into the ground. This happened right in front of me at about 350'. His longbed driveshaft polevaulted his truck up about ten feet, the rearend of the truck came up and over the front, and the truck landed right on the top of the cab. The cab was totally flat with the rest of the truck, and it literally snapped ronnie in half. The paremedics declared him dead at the time of the accident.

I don't really like talking about that. :(
