How should I build this head???

I posted this in here cause I was hoping there were some builders who can give me the best answer.

My 90 GSX AWD has around 135K on it. The head is making the classic lifter noise, and I took my manifold off today, and discovered it has two studs broke off in it. My stock turbo is in perfect shape, I just ordered a full 3" Bruschur racing exhaust, and chip for 660s from dsmchips. I am upgrading the intercooler and doing a GM MAFT blowthrough setup. Here is my question:

Can I get a "rebuild kit" for the head with new springs, lash adjusters, etc. ??? I take it stock cams will be o.k. until I put the GT30r on there that I want, then I will do the HKS 272s. Or should I just buy a new ported head right now with new everything. I believe this costs around $1000-1300 right? Let me know guys, I am no expert when it comes to DSMs.

the studs that are broke can be drilled out and retapped.

you can rebuild a head nicely for about 400.
 
keep your money in your pocket. I might be a rookie at rebuilding heads, ( third day on the job and I'm loving it) but I know that you don't need that stuff, yet. You don't need to replace the springs. Keep the stock ones. I don't even think you need to rebuild the thing. That's low mileage. Are the seals or the guides leaking? have you done a compression test and a leakdown test? You don't want to spend money where you don't have to. Forced induction motors don't need ported heads as much as NA cars. Keep the stock cams for now.
You can buy components for your head, but unless you have speacilized equipment, a machine shop will have to rebuild it for you.
From looking at your mods I would put that money into a new exhaust.
 
Well tried to get the studs out, and they are stuck in there.... I am good at extracting, but it looks like the head needs to come off. I guess a little bit of porting, and new lifters, and fix the studs is what I am going to have to do... Sucks to be me right now....:thumbdown
 
I know people here in CO at RMDSM that are running 8000+RPM on the stock head.

One guy in particular revs to 8.5K on his stroker, (this isn't fabricated), with these crower cams that have a higher lift than than 272s.......with stock springs and retainers.
 
I believe the stock head in all years have hydraulic lifters tho. When you overrev you go into float but you don't come crashing down like you do with solid lifters. Gain is you don't ruin the cams but you don't get good valve closing either. Your friend will probably see an increase in power by just replacing hte springs and retainers (valves probably too).
 
I got a good deal on a fresh 1G head with new 1mm oversized valves, 5-angle, mild port and polish. I will buy the revisied lifter set and call it good. FOR now....... Thanks guys! Anyone know where the best place is for Denso 660cc injectors? I need some....

Yes, but the airflow at 3500+ft is a much different then the airflow at 750ft. I do agree to an extent that any supercharged head needs minimal porting to see the desired power output.

I would always recommend someone to start off with a fresh new head. Being a fan of SBR I would tell you to check out the Stage 2 or 3 head with some lower lift and less duration cams. Maybe Comp cams. Since you already have a head core the new stock head would only cost you 475$ and thats hot tanked, pressure checked, and decked. It has new valve guides, seals, valves, springs, retainers, and new exhaust manifold studs!! Thats my favorite part. 975$ and 1075$ isnt bad for the slightly worked heads either. Have fun.

i agree with 1/2 of your 1st comment. Turbocharged cars benefit pretty good from a ported head when its ported right, ported alot and ported on the exhaust side. and if you port the head you have to port the manifolds as well or else you will hurt VE only thing to watch is porting the venturi between the two valves... less material means easier to heat up, and aluminum doesnt take to kindly to heat as well as steel or cast iron.
as far as specialized equipment you can assemble a head in your bedroom if you wanted... all u need is a magnet a mallet a deep socket and a valve spring compressor and DOHC stem adapter. the compressor and adapter can be bought at pep boys for under 75.00 or 100 from summit. oh and a 2.00 tube of lapping compound.

and yes i agree with leaving the head alone however, and yes... 1st thing is 1st... get the exhaust you said you want to buy...

You can save a lot of money taking the cylinder head apart yourself. Some parts are difficult to clean, but if you have time and patience you could do it yourself (may not be as good as hot tanking or beadbalsting). Lapping valves is not even close to recutting seats (make sure valves are shortened when the seats are cut), and I can't resurface a head in my bedroom.
You could do a lot of the work yourself, which will save you money, but you should have certain things done with specific machinery, specially if you plan on making power.

I said nothing of decking a head in a bedroom or tanking or o ringing or anthing involved with machine work. I simply disagreed with your false statement about how turbo motors do not benefit from porting. I threw my 2 cents in in order to help this kid out, not "flame" you but when people simply post up false info just for the sake of posting it ruins peoples knowledge and ideas not only for the person making the thread but people who read it. The whole "bedroom" statement was a joke to show that disassembling/ assembling a head is not hard at all.

I never said that turbo motors do not benefit from porting. Go back and read what YOU quoted. Your the one who just said that. I said turbo motors don't need ported heads as much as Naturaly Aspirated cars. Which is true. There is greater pressure in the combustion chambers of forced induction applications. The gasses find they're way out relatively easily.
When you used the "bedroom" analogy about rebuilding a cylinder head, I took no offence, and still don't. Much like yourself, I just want to help out with my experince in the matter. You stated that you can rebuild a cylinder head with no machine work. I disagree. Simple.
On a different topic:
There is a lot more to porting that what you hear. You don't just go around and enlarging the ports. You have to make sure that they flow properly, with little or no turbulance. You port while ON the flowbench.You also have to match port the manifolds.

and i was talking about the benefit of porting the exhaust ports... more volume and more velocity makes for faster spool... spool as in turbocharger.

im sorry if you misunderstood. I did not "state" its possible to rebuild a head in a bedroom... If you read me wrong i was just talking about assmebling and disassembling

i agree, as i mention earlier in the thread. did i tell anyone to go around enlarging ports? not that i can recall would you like to see the #'s from my old head i ported?

anyways about this head... if you want to port, send it out or find a flowbench. if you want a nice rebuilt one take everything apart yourself, its easy... have it cleaned and decked by a machine shop or whatever else you feel may be needed. then reassemble yourself. you will save alot.
