2G How possible is a 6G72TT swap and RWD conversion?

I've been trying to figure out what I want to do with my little 2G RS. I've come up with several options before this - rebuild and turbo/nitro the 420a, swap to a built 4G and convert it to a GS-T or GSX, make it purely an exercise in aerodynamics - but yesterday I had an idea. I have an old, run-down, damaged 3000GT VR-4 sitting in my driveway that I'll be parting out. I had plans of rebuilding the engine and drivetrain to support ~550hp and generally fixing the car up with an all-cf body and basically making it a modern, hi-tech supercar. Since I'm now parting it out, I can save whatever parts I want, some of which are already in the Eclipse. Here's where my idea comes in:

What if I took out the 6G72TT, rebuilt it from the ground up, then mounted it inline in the 2G with custom mounts? Then get a custom transmission and driveshaft made to fit into a GSX's rear end with an upgraded diff and other bits so it's purely RWD. It's a TON of work and probably would cost as much as a used Porsche, yes, but what I'm wondering is if this is even possible. Would a 6G72TT fit in the engine bay under the hood? Could a transmission fit in the propshaft space's opening (or in the rear for a rear-mounted transmission/diff combo - I don't mind moving the fuel tank or modifying the spare wheel area to make room)? Would the car be able to handle the extra weight, or would I have to beef up the suspension and mounting points? What other problems would this swap and conversion cause?

My BF says it's a stupid idea and doesn't see the point. I think it would be an interesting way to make use of an old engine and do something that's never been done before (maybe, haven't seen it done at least). What do you think?

Youre going to have to get a different front subrframe and trim alot of the firewall to clear a transmission. The driveshaft should fit in the exhaust channel and would have to be custom/modified probably. Youd want to either swap a gsx rear subframe or the whole vr4 rear subframe in unless you go straight axle. The 6g72 should fit easily on the engine bay longitudinally, youll have to make mounts and most likely rework the turbo placement for mount integration.

Its not impossible, and would be a major amount of money/work, but in the end idk if its be worth the effort. There are other motors you could go with that are more reliable/easy to work on (4g63), but if you want to and have the skills, go for it.

Anything is possible.... but unless you have access to a complete fab shop with necessary skills and deep pockets don't do it. that's why only a couple dsms have ever been converted to rwd. And no transmission won't fit... firewall and floor would need to be cut and boxed in.
I know you have a 2g but look at this... notice its all no no and no.. just buy a cheap gst or gsx and build it. But if it must be this one... build the 420a and add some boost.

Start with a rwd platform imo. I dont know why people bother rwd conversion on a fwd based chassis when there are countless cheap rwd platforms to use. Like a 240 for example.

I saw that video awhile back.... I was under the impression... that it was gsx and all he did was weld diff and cut the axles out. It was not a legit rwd car... correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree and did say before anything can be done. Not trying to discourage... but do know whats ahead of you.... steering redone, subframe, firewall ect.... Like the v8 swap dsm's 4 life did haha... it was painful to watch it happen.... but I will say if I could have I would have been in his garage helping him out every weekend.. look around for rwd 2g dsm. They are on these forums. If you get a chance check out this . I give this guy props haha I watched the progress as it happend.
didn't mean to get off topic... but look around the forums you will find the info you need... then you can decide if you're willing to take on the rwd conversion.

i believe there may be something even more possible.

A 4g63 motor mated to a FWD trans placed in the rear hatch of the Rs, making it a mid /rear engine. You'll have a RWD capable of putting down plenty of power.

Yes it requires thinking, planning and fabbing. But perhaps a bit less than your initial idea.

Any RWD of any sort will require a variable of X.
