Transmissions to use..

how hard would it be to make a 1g rwd?
Just cut the floor out and make one to fit over the trans, make motor mounts, and who can forget sit and stare for a while.
This is not anything im planning on doing in the near future, but a 4g63t rx7 would be fun too.

Yup or weld the center diff and disable the front diff. Unfortuntly the rear diff cant handle much power, i blew mine out 30 mins after making it rwd

Are you starting from a AWD or a FWD. AWD will take less work. The biggest problem is clearing the steering rack. You will have to fabricate a new crossmember that puts it lower or higher so that it clears the transmission.

In the rear, a fwd will need the spare tire well removed. You could probably get away with using leaf springs in the original rear suspension mounts. However backhalving the car would be a much better idea. In anycase installing some mini tubs would be a good idea as a 1g doesn't have much room for a big tire.

Before I converted my car to awd I was considering going rwd. I still may.

There are alot of options from center diff. welding, to turning the engine from side2side to front2back.

I think this guy had the best idea. He made custom bellhousings that mate a 4g63 to either a turbo or non turbo supra tranny. Even busher racing has one to mate a 4g63 to a GM trans.

i recently tried this and i had a great f*cking time doing it to.. i dropped my stock trany got myself a dogbox with double syncro first and sec. and had the center dif welded up.. after that for the first day it was amazing.. second day i couldnt keep it on the road... third day converted to AWD again... great set up if you want to be the only one at the drift event running a eagle talon or eclipse... other then that dont do it... you will be spending more mony on a rear diff and tires then you would gas

hhmmm...
my car has a rear in it already, just a fwd trans.
You guy's dont think I would have to start hacking at the firewall, or flooring to make it fit?

I realized while I was at work that this should be in the hangout.
I was half awake when I posted it.

Has anyone tried using the welded awd trans with xfer case and just mating a diff rear end at the driveshaft? Say from a high power rwd, like camaro or older mustang. POSI ftw. This may be an upcoming project in my near future, as I think 1g bodys look like drift cars anyway.

ok napkin i dont know the exact specs on a rear end swap but you probaly would have more luck with and aftermarket rear end then doing a full swap.... another thing is when you eliminate the front wheels you also put all the street on the diff and without a welded diff your not going to make it down the block i promise you...

OP- no you dont have to hack at the fire wall... if you want a full rear whell drive dsm without doing huge amounts of customizing and welding then like i told napkin run a welded diff on an aftermarket transfer case and eliminate the front wheel drive... you will have to seel up the holes that are meant for the drive train for the front wheels but that is not difficult

I wasn't talking about a dsm trans at all. I was meaning turning the motor straight and bolting a rwd trans in there. I can pick up a posi, disc brake rear end out of a turbo thunderbird for free.
I believe it's a 4 lug rear, but i'v had mismatch rims before.. haha

So lets say I want to experiment with this whole RWD thing...

I would pull the front shafts and plug the holes, then get the center diff welded. After this, I would assume I would have a cool RWD talon, albeit with a weak rear diff.

SO, lets say I've converted to RWD but I decide I want to go back to AWD. I throw the front shafts back in, but will it still be driveable and everything with the welded center diff? Or would I have to swap out the entire thing so the center diff would no longer be welded?

What happens when you have a welded center diff with AWD going around a corner?

I've wanted to try this ever since I pulled my tranny out for the first time about 5 years ago. I think I would prefer the AWD, but it should would be cool if I could switch between RWD and AWD by just swapping in the front shafts.
