so while wasting life on youtube I cam across a video that has struck my interest. there are a few guys from new Zealand (I believe) that converted their AWD EVO 1 2 3's over to rear wheel drive by removing the VC and basically taking out the axles and using only the inner and outer splines. my questions would be:

1. looks fun as hell but how much power can the T-Case and rear end hold on a 2G?
2. could you run any more power than you would if you were running AWD? since you are putting all power to the rear wheels and not 4, less stress on the transmission etc.

I already know that the 2G does not have a VC and would essentially be a welded diff, that so many do anyway for drag racing.

The W5M33 transmission in the 2G does have a VC to limit slip in the center diff. So to do what you are describing would require welding the center diff and plugging the output holes from the front axles. But think it through, guys are already blowing up transfer cases in high HP cars right now. Thats with only 50% of the power going through it. You take that same HP and put 100% of it through the T-Case and youre going to be blowing them left and right along with the rear end.

The driveline parts in our cars are tiny. Have you ever looked at the difference between the size of rear diffs and transmission splines from say a RWD Mustang and our cars. Almost twice as big in most cases. The only reason we get away with having such small driveline parts in high HP cars is that we are AWD and the load is shared. And even then we are blowing stuff up.

So while you could do what you are suggesting on the cheap to get a few drifting sessions in, don't expect it too last.

I didnt plan on it, i kind of already knew it wasnt a good idea and plus awd stuff is expensive. Like i said a proper setup would be a d50 trans slightly built to maybe a custom ford 8.8 irs out of a tbird. They are dirt cheap out of a junk yard and some come lsd. Not sure i want to hack my nearly perfect 95 talon for this anyway even though a high hp rwd dsm would be a blast to drive.
