Im buying a parts car (90 gst) for the transmission and other parts.

The transmission is in good condition except when downshifting from 2nd to 1st gear it will grind or be hard to get into...how bad is this or is it normal? I dont want to get it if the trans is about to go out.

I also had the question of what install kit to get for an evo 9 fuel pump on a 90 fwd laser, but i didnt want to bump my other thread...any ideas.

Im buying this car soon so any advice would help.

I would think that any grinding of the trans is bad. How frequent is the grinding. If it is first and second then the syncro is going. I woulnt buy a tranny that has problems, do some research and find yourself a good trans. Also how much do they want for the tranny, You might be better off going to a junk yard and finding one from there. Last but not least, make sure you find a 90 trans, I know between 90 and 91 the inputshaft on the 90 is shorter and will not work on a 91 and above.

Well its only the downshift going from 2nd to 1st, not 1st to second upshift. All the other gears are fine.

Im paying $300 for the transmission, stock rims, oem bumpers and side skirts, seats, and interior parts. My cousin is paying the other 300 and getting the head, and other engine parts. After we get what we want where going to sell whatevers left that we didnt use to try and get a hundred back each.

And it is a 90 transmission, I thought if you get a 91+ and want to put it in a 90 car all you need is the shifter cables and shifter.

I wish that were true. The 90 inputshaft is shorter so if you were to put in a 91 or above trans it wouldnt line up. If thats the only problem with the trans i say go ahead, but i would seriously take my time if i were you. Look around and see what better deals are out there.

I have the same problems with 2nd gear shifting except mine are worse. I cannot get to 1st gear at all unless the car comes to a complete stop. Sometimes it just won't go in regardless, and I have to use 2nd and slip the clutch to move the car a little in order to engage 1st. I have a rough time going up into 3rd if I'm above 4.5k rpms. Also, when shifting from 1-2 I feel a catch when passing through neutral.
I'm planning a BG Synchro Shift II fluid change as soon as I can. I've read that sometimes this is all it takes to cure those symptoms.

Thanks a lot, and this is just what ive been told about the tranny, i dont usually downshift anyway.

Also i was under the impression that 91+ transmissions can fit in 90 cars if you were to swap cables and shifter, but one of the above post said the input shafts are longer or shorter. Whats correct?

About my first post anyone know what install kit to use for evo 9 fuel pump on a 90 fwd car?
