How long did your clutch job take?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

That's a good time, but it's not the fastest. There's a guy in SoCal that did a complete clutch swap, including swapping the flywheel in just 58 minutes. He had all the best tools and equipment.

Back to reality- in my driveway it usually takes me about 8 hours total working time to do a clutch job on my FWD Laser.

I was a total newbie and it was the first thing I had ever done myself to a vehicle and I used the vfaq step-by-step and it totalled 9+ hours. Hella long I know, but it was my first time and I was nervous.

Boz

i got it down to a science since iv had it out 3 times already. My 2 and a half hours is in my garage on stands layin on my back ALONE!! I do have an impact, and other air tools, and pretty much all of the bolt sizes/locations memorized. Iv read through the haynes and the vfaq... man half the stuff they tell you, you DONT have to do. For example, they tell you to take off the whole steering knuckle off to remove the axles.... NO!!! Just pop off the axle nuts, and then pop off the tie rod ball joint, then take out the 2 bolt/nuts that hold the strut to the knuckle. So thats 4 things to remove to get your axles out. Then get under the car with a pry bar, pop it out(note.. drivers side you do not have to take out all the way, just take the 2 14mm bolts that hold the intermediate shaft out and let it hang.)... and boom, your axles are both out in under 15min.

Then since your under the car, remove the crossmember, then there is a little plate type deal by the back of the crossmember thats held in by 4 or 5 bolts.. Drop that plate, it will give you a shit load more room to get the tranny out., then move to the front and take out the salve cylinder.

up top...take all your pipes/intake, batt/tray out, MAKE SURE THE TRANNY IS SUPPORTED!!!!!!!! take out all of the 14mm bolts that hold the trans to the block, including the starter. the you can squeeze a long extension and a swivle into the trans mount to get that off the trans (for instalation youll want to take the pin out of the bracket as well)... Take all of the brakets for the shifter cables off, take off the cables, speedo cable,....

brain fart... obviously im forgeting some things here and there

basicly just look at it and make since of it all. Youll see, or learn what you need to take of, and what you dont. If you need help, just let me know and ill try to help as much as possible.. me SN for AIM is fattie92

TIP!!!!!!!!! drain your tranny before you take out the axles!! otherwise youll get gearlube all over the floor. Plus this makes the trans a little lighter to mover around.

If it's your first time digging that deep into your car, it will take a while. At least 8 hours.

Once you've done it a couple times (and have air tools :thumb: ) you can become pretty fast at swapping them out.

REGARDLESS of how fast you go, it's still a pain in the ass, so have fun!

i can vouch for that!! my first time took me a while...

I do it in like 7hrs in a 2 day period, thats just too much stress for one day :)
the first time is a bi*** and you'll never want to do it again, but after the 4th 5th or 6th or feels quite normal to me

around 4 hrs the 1st time, thats including sending my wife to autozone to get a 32mm socket to take axles out. and an hour bleeding the lines and adjusting stuff and randomly searching for tools i misplaced.

2nd time like 2 hrs thats pulling old motor out, unbolting tranny, putting it on other engine and putting entier thing back in car. i got bored at like 2 in the morning when i did that. i just hooked up this chain hoist to my rafter in my car port and just had to try it out.

If your a n00b and haven't worked much on your car look at a 10+ hour job. All i have to say is take your time and dont rush becasue that is when you make mistakes and you'll pay for it later.

A unrelated question, bare with me:

if
Hand Job = Female hand on male genitals
and
Blow Job = Female mouth on male genitals
then
Clutch Job = ?

You don't even need to remove the axle nuts. Just undo the two hub knuckle bolts, pop it out, and rotate the steering wheel. Then pop the axle out.

i pop the left axle out and leave the right with the car. whenever i have the motor/trans out i always find something else to do to it while it's out so total job takes me about 3-4 hours, and a 30 pack of old style

sweet, ill keep that in mind

yeah don't make the mistake of drinking that 30 pack in one sitting, and then doing your tranny...you'll find yourself in a pool of excretions the next morning, wondering "where the hell is my tranny, and how come a smiley face is spraypainted on my chest? Why am i holding this guitar?"....be the wiser. :thumb:

4.5 hours, first time. 3 hours second time. I think I got it down under 3 hours now ever since. I've done about 5 or 6 now. All AWD cars.

All I did was take out the lower strut mounting bolts and pull the hub and lower control arm down and out of the way. The last thing I wanted to mess with were the tie rods.

yeah i have done it like that a few times, then relized how much easier it was to just pop that nut off that joint and then get the axle out.

I don't have impact tools, so the less muscle work for me the better :thumb:
