well i just did a good half hour of pointless searching and ended up no where..

so.. how long did it take you guys [ who did the install themselves ] to do your install? i'm trying to figure out how much time it'll take to install my b16g.

oh yea, is it as much a pain as everyone is making it?

thanks

it takes about 10 hours for first timers if you have all the parts. With a 2G install kit i would get all new manifold and o2 bolt trust me it saves alot of time. It is not hard at all my friend in I got both sets of directions off of VFAQ.com and took use 11 hours with a lunch & madden 2004 break:p

It took me about 5 or six hours. Most of it was spent taking everything apart. But thats a given. Having the full install kit helps alot. I wouldn't say it was a pain, but some of those bolts did warrant profanities to get them loose.

Mine took 20 days, but I had a lot of "extra" things to deal with like: o2 sensor stuck in o2 housing, so i had to get a new one of each to get it ported and my car was in a front end accident before i got my car so i had to get a slim line fan so the j pipe would clear the fan. Also i had my 16g, exhaust manifold, and o2 housing ported. Last, there was a vacation somewhere in between these days. But if everything works out smoothley it could be a one day thing.

If you're a newbie plan on giving a weekend to the cause unless you have a friend that can help you organize/ hold shit. Once you've done it before I'd say it takes about 5 hours or less after you drain oil and coolant.

yo dude, where did you get that sexay j-pipe?

is that the only thing you are installing?

what about your manifold and O2 housing, are they ported already? are they going to be ported before you drop in the new turbo?

I changed out my mani, o2 housing and turbo and it only took me about 3 hours to do it.

It's easier when u take off the mani cuz all you have to do is unbolt the manifold studs and the 4 turbo bolts, go under the car and unbolt the downpipe bolts. lift off the manifold and there is easy access to your hard to reach stock oil line and your water lines.

Then on the install i did it this way.

bolted the o2 housing to the turbo and torqued.
put on the water lines and bent them.
bolted on the oil feed line.
bolt on the manifold to the head. (it's good to do this before anything else, that way it is a lot easier to get to the bottom mani studs to torque them)
after that, just slide the turbo and O2 housing in the gap under your manifold (you will need to push your downpipe down a tad, it will flex at the flex point)
then make sure your water lines are gonna work.
get the turbo bolts started, then torque em
go under the car and bolt the dp back on.
u are gonna have to drill out your drain tube bolt holes for the turbo too a tad with dremel, takes like 2 minutes if that. Then bolt up the return tube to the turbo, leave bolts loose a bit, then bolt it up to the oil pain, then tighten them all down. (i used the gaskets, they sucked bad leaked everywhere, took the return tube off again and used hi-temp gasket maker-worked like a champ.
wallah done in a jiffy

If you have everything required for this change and you are somewhat mechanically inclined, it should be a piece of cake for you.

now if you are leaving your stock mani and O2 housing how they are (not recommended if the are in stock form-get them ported), i'm sure this will take u a bit longer cuz it's a pain in the arss to get to certain things having to go under the manifold.

peace and good luck on the swap bro

This part took me a lot longer than two minutes-- until I found the right bit, then it was over quickly. The right tools are everything.

If you encounter no surprises during the install (which is rare), it probably will take anywhere from 4-8 hours, depending on if you have all the right tools already, and if no bolts get stuck or studs broken off in the head, etc. :D

It's not that difficult, though-- I highly recommend doing it yourself instead of paying somebody hundreds of dollars to do it.

cool thanks guys.. i was about to hand over 200 -250 bucks to a shop to do the install but decided that would be better suited to go into the injectors/SAFCII fund. :thumb:

Exactly what I did. I had never worked on my car prior and did the install with minimal help (holding & advice) from my father-in-law. He is a Chevy guy and just got done rebuilding a 57 so he was not in the mood of getting under my Foriegn Enginebay. He kept cursing it so I just bought him some beer and turned on the garage television. Asking for tools and the occasional help in holding a part to hand me when I got under the car was the limit. Took me about 7 hours all together with an occasional stop to yell at a play or 2 of a Redskins Game.:thumb:

If he is a chevy guy, you probably don't want him under your hood anyways. DOHC motors, especially our 4g63 is nothing similar to a chevy V8 motor. I used to be a chevy man, couldn't afford the gas though, so i switched to mitsu due to the fact that i can outrun a V8 and i get pretty damn good gas mileage too. Gotta love em'!

Yeah, he is pretty cool and all. It was his garage so he was around. He had some good advice about how to get shit off that was rusted. You should know that the Chevy guys can get a anything off using 5 tools at the same time in a manner that they were never intended to be used for in the first place.;)

It was all good though. Nothing like a set of extra hands!!
