How do i take off my head? 7bolt

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

your goin to need a 12 mm allen socket for the head bolts if they are stock and i think a 14mm 12 point socket if you have ARP head studs to remove the nut on top and a large breaker bar

If you havent taken the intake manifold off the head dont forget about the bracket that holds that sucker on. Its kind of a Y shaped bracked that attaches under the intake manifold and bolts it to the black. I forgot that once makes things......difficult. ROFL

heheh...the rook can't give u any points. I will however :)

Head Removal/Mini Rebuild

Enjoy.

thanks, i have actually pulled the engine and i did a crappy job being specific in the title of what i actually needed... just the stock socket was what i needed to know :)

the procedure you linked me to says this:

Remove valve cover and then remove the bolts that hold the head on. Make sure you untorque them in small steps and in the opposite order of the torque down procedure. This is best done with a 10MM 1/2inch drive IMPACT SOCKET.

so im a but confused with the 10mm now.. the first guy said 12mm allen.

I do not think that it is 10mm. I've removed the head on my GST twice and I remember it being 12mm. If it was 10mm a 12mm wouldn't work at all. It wouldn't "round off" the bolt or anything if you tried it...it just plain wouldn't work at all. And if you try a 10mm socket on a 12mm bolt, it just WILL NOT fit on it.

So grab a few sockets, I'm betting on 12, and go see what fits. :thumb:

12mm 12point socket. Star socket basically. Whoever told you allen is high. You need that socket and either a breaker bar or the pipe for your jack to break em loose. Be sure they havent streched when you look at them otherwise they have to be replaced.... with arp's.

ok heres the deal, i went back and looked at it and there are three allen head bolts in the middle of the head and star bolts on the parameter.. after reading youre replies im guessing its the star bolts.

i didnt count, but how many are there? 6?

and im doing a complete rebuild, new bolts will definitely be part of it.

why ARP? are they stronger? bigger?

and leave that bracket off ! it makes for WAY easyer future head or manifold -pulls.
