Ok Im doing a all black interior in my 99 gst, and it came with the black dash, doors, center console the works. The only things that weren't black were the A and B pillars, the trunk peices and hatch cover along with the pannels under the dash and the carpet, along with the seats. SO, the previous owners grandson "worked" on the interior. He spray painted the gray pannels under the dash RED WTFand the lower part of the doors red as well so it "Flows well with the car". :( That was the only blimish on the whole car. He told me over and over he was the only one that drove it. Yea.. :rolleyes:Anyway, Im almost done with the all black except on the doors. Im trying to take the blasted paint off with out hurting the black under neath, and thinners didnt work, rubbin alcohol didnt either. Im afraid to try paint stripper because I was told it might fade the black under it. The only thing thats kinda worked is masking tape. I KNOW. It peels it off, but VERY slowly, about 2 hours to do half the door, but it wont get all of it. So does anyone know how to remove the paint safely, and faster? I'll say it now cause im sure someone will ask:"Well how did you get it off the pannels under the dash???" I didn't I spraid over it. The doors are the only thing left and it's making me mad. Im going to a slavage yard tomorrow to pick up some black seats, so it would be awesome if somebody knows how to take the stuff off. Thanks again guys, sorry I went on a bit of a rant here. Ive been workin on the interior since Thanksgiving so any help is great. Hers a pic of it when I got it:

They have this liquid called mr. magnesium i think it is, it is a yellow spray bottle, that they sell at autozone. It is a green-colored liquid degreaser that works very good. Has a semi-strong lemon smell to it but it IMO it worked great on my previous 2 cars and let me tell you this thing takes off grease like no other product i have used. Not sure as to wether it will take off the paint without taking the black off underneath it as i have never used it to take off paint but it is worth a shot. Worst case scenario just repaint the panels.

Its factory black under the red paint thats why I dont wanna spray the doors black. If all else fails I might have to do that, but Im worried it wont match up color wise. Thanks for the tip on Mr. Magnesium I might try it. Anybody else know of a way to take the junk off?

No, I got her from a elderly gent in Oklahoma. His grandson may have put her up on here, but the only thing that was done to it was the red paint. Ok so after lots of time and a roll of duck tape I got most of the paint off. The paint on the speakers wont come off now... So I think Im gonna just have to mask them off and paint em. Lol oh well.

Hey me and my friend just had to repaint his interior because the kid who had it before him painted everything blue on a black 2g. he wanted to keep the factory gray underneath so we took the car to my work, a body shop, and took all the painted panels off, cleaned them with enamel cleaner and then used aircraft stripper which you can find at auto zone. just spray it, let sit for 30 seconds then take a damp towel and wipe off. takes the paint off without damaging the actual piece.

Yeah that paint remover stuff i bought i got on my hands while stripping my valve cover and it burnt the crap out on my hands. So make sure to use gloves. And i was going to suggest that but wasn't sure if it would eat away at the plastic.Good luck.

yeah it shouldnt eat away at the paint, not strong enough. its a little weaker than paint thinner so is safe and yeah, gloves is a must, dont need to go messin up your hands on something silly like that

I would be very hesitant to use Aircraft stripper on plastic. It says right on the back of the can, "Do not use on plastic" . I just went out to my garage and checked the can I have. Not saying that it won't work since I have not tried it but I would be very weary and do a test on the back of a panel ect.

Good luck

Kevin

Do not use Aircraft paint stripper. It's designed for use on metals only. Anything otherwise will be eaten. That stuff will burn your hand. Have you tried mineral spirits? Or kerosene? They're typically a multipurpose paint stripper used in aircrafts. You could also try methyl ethyl keytone but that stuff is highly toxic. Also give acetone a whirl.

Ok thanks for that warning. Yea I've tried mineral spirits. Didn't do anything. I've tried lots of stuff but nothing has seemed to work. Ill try some of the stuff you metioned crimsondragon. Like I said, I have most of that crap off, but theres some overspray and some junk in cracks as well as some that the duck tape couldn't pull off. I used armour-all to restore the black and it really showed the overspray and stuff I missed. I hate this stuff, it chips and peels when you dont want it to, but you couldn't give it 100 bucks to come off when you want it off. Thanks for all the help and good luck wishes.

Not to argue i used aircraft stripper on a friends car and he has had it for a year now and the plastic still looks brank new and no fading or wear on the back so asfar as i know aircraft stripper works pretty decent. its up to you though im sure there are better things out there but that worked for me. good luck.
