I got in trouble for my ehxaust cause Massachusetts sucks... So i gotta try to get my car sound close to stock... i have a 2.5 in exhaust and a loud muffler but my baffle doesnt really do shit... I was wondering if there was anyway to make a better baffle or if i can order suttin... Or do you think throwing a stock muffler on there would quiet it right down or is there a performance muffler out there that i can get that is really really quiet...

Appreciate anyones help

Thanks

You can probally find some performance exhausts that have drop in silencers and what not, that may be quieter then your current exhaust. Other then that, you would probally have to revert back to stock exhaust to quiet it down some.

Another thing to do, and I am not sure if this works in your state or not, but when you get your new exhaust set up, take it to the DMV or maybe even a shop around there, and get them to test how loud it is. So long as it pass's I think 95db at 2500rpm, they will give you a ticket saying its a legal exhaust. Just keep that with the car, and if a l.e.o pulls you over for exhaust noise, just whip that out and they cant really do much about it.

Hope it helps,

Exiled

my 3" tsudo catback with 3" downpipe sounds just BARELY louder than stock, still quieter than a v6 or v8, and I felt a MASSIVE perfomance upgrade in it. Don't through your stock muffler on there it will sufficate your entire car :nono:

The Laws in Massachusetts suck and I already got my registration revoked for a loud exhaust... So I am looking for a quiet muffler without losing much performance for a 1996 Eclipse GST

Just get a resonator welded into your exhaust, that's what I am going to do.
Maybe 2 resonators. Do you have a catalytic converter? Those help quiet it down more too. And who doesn't like saving the environment... :p

My RNR is a tad loud, so I made a few changes to my driving habits. I use the gears more (less of that "straining" roar from the engine in the low RPMs) and I don't leave in gear when i'm coming to a stop at night. We'll see how long I last.

go to a muffler shop. they should be able order you these magnaflow mufflers that look like a stock muffler, but they have a 3'' inlet and outlet''. cost $65 for mine. it sounds really nice at high rpms. almost 350zish, but not quite... it is a straight path that looks like this:

Try a Thermal exhaust system. They are fairly quiet.

I have the thermal and it is loud as hell.

Your best bet would be an apexi n1. They are supposed to be in the legal DB range.

Alot of exhausts are in legal db limit. Depending on your area you will still get pulled over for having and aftermarket exhaust period. I would try a silencer or the resanator method, first since getting a new exhaust will cost much more.

I have a Tenzo R muffler on a custom exhaust with only a high flow cat, and its no loud at all, its almost hard to tell if the cars running sound wise when your in my car at idle.

Magnaflow 3 chamber or flowmaster 70 series. You can get a magnaflow with 3" inlet and dual 2.25" outlet. Looks bone stock and sounds smooth. Cop pulled my buddy over for a tag light being out and then tried to tell me twice that his exhaust was illegal. Both times I looked him right in the eye without hesitance and told him it was bone stock, though it was totally illegal but he was running the 14" magnaflow. Cop replied, "Yeah, you're right" and left feeling stupid. Another friend runs the 18" magnaflow with 3" O2 back and it sounds 100% OEM. I just fabbed up my brother's 3" O2 back exhaust today running the 3" inlet/ dual 2.5" outlet 14" magnaflow because he's been hassled by cops lately while running an Apexi N1 muffler. I gaurantee the magnaflow to fool them everytime, especially if you stick to your guns.

I've got the Magnaflow that is 18" long and has dual 3" outlets with an 18" Summit glasspack before it and it's loud. Wasn't bad when new but the packing has settled and now it's way too loud. I will have to add either a Random Tech nology cat or another typr of muffler/resonator in the system. There just isn't a good flowng muffler that is quiet. I even considered dual exhaust. mark

On the contrary, the Thermals for the gst's seem to be louder then the gsx's. I was expecting mine to be loud but its not at all. A friend of mine with a spyder gst is louder then mine and we have roughly the same setup.:rocks:

My Thermal is pretty loud to. I don't know if you have heard of Ractive but I have a friend with a TSI and he put the ractive muffler on his 3" turboback and it sounds like a freaking jet. There is no exhaust noise at all.

I don't realy think that made sense ^^. If it sounds like a jet, how can it be quiet. When i think of jets, i think almost eardrum blowing sound. Espically on takeoff.

Baffled mufflers, or cats, with stock looking tips. Thats about the only option.

The dual tip method works, I'll be one to talk since I live in socal. I run the dual tips from rre and a magnaflow strait through muffler with a 12" resonator from rre and I'm actually thinking about taking out the resonator because its too quite. I've been in front of numerous chp's and city cops and never been pulled over for sound of exhaust. I run no cat and it is qqqqqquiet. So anyway I'm changing mine out for an ebay strait through muffler and no resonator and a bored out cat cause I'm sick of it being quite. Plus I just registered my car in NY so no more cali police bothering me about smog and ref and shit.

Why are you going to go from running no cat to running a hollowed out or "bored out" cat? That will mess with flow quite a bit. Just leave the cat off, or take the shell of the old one and wrap it around your new pipe if you're worried about a no-cat fine.

At the velocity that the exhaust gasses are moving why the hell would it affect flow, maybe I should have mentioned its a 3" cat. But other than that you dont make any sense.

HAHA, how do i not make sense? Regardless of how fast something is moving, going from 3" into a hollowed cat (which will be much larger than 3") back to your exhaust will create rediculous turbulance. Seriously, read some threads on hollowed cats before you tell me i don't make sense.

If you want to run a cat, and have it flow get a randomtechnology cat. More flow, with real cat abilities, or get some other kind of high flow cat. Or don't run a cat at all.

Honestly for the cost of just getting a test pipe put in, don't hollow a cat. Espically if you're not worried about sound.

Personally, I think my N1 is more quiet than most other exhausts i've heard. That includes Greddy Evo, and Thermal, which are both usually considered to be pretty quiet exhausts. If I put the silencer in, it sounds pretty close to stock. (of course, that's no fun)

looked into it I guess your right it causes turbulence

Isd the RRE resonator the straight through type or does it have louvers? I am looking for something to quiet my nsystem as the Magnaflow had settled it's packing now after a yer and is quite noisy compared to last summer and I also have an 18" Summit straight thru glasspack ahead of the Magnaflow. Thanks, mark

Most cops don't care if its quiet or not. When i got two tickets at different times the first ticket was marked as Loud/Altered Muffler, the second ticket only said Altered Muffler. Kinda retarted that its illegal to not have a stock exhaust WTF
Honestly anyone should be able to do their own exhaust the way they want. The 350's, infinity's along with the new corvette's are much louder than my car is with an altered exhaust. It's totally not fair that i'll get a ticket for having a loud exhaust when those cars blow past me producting 2x the loudness

Yea it has the louvers, in it . Some say its a restriction but unless your pushing boat loads of power I dont see it killing horses at all.
