I was wondering what some of you guys thought about a chiped fin on this ported/polished big16g. I have used this turbo and had great luck with it, but I've decided to upgrade to a 50 trim. I'm trying to sell this and I'd just like some other opinions as to how big of deal this small chip is. The turbo has zero shaft play btw.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread. I have no intentions of trying to sell it here. This is why I havn't included what I'm asking for it. I just want other peoples opinions. Thanks

How the hell did it get chipped like that? WTF

BTW... I wouldn't pay much for because it would have to get rebuilt, and it wouldn't be cheap.

I don't know how it got chipped. I baught it that way. But that's beside the point really. I was just wondering what the effects would be and how bad it is. Like I said, I never noticed it driving, but I just wanted other opinions.

Well if thats all you wanted to know, you've already answered your question. I don't think anybody would pay more than a hundred dollars for it, and that would be a long shot. A rebuild will run around $350 and you'll need to buy a new compressor wheel for around $100, and pay for shipping on top of all that. Who ever bought it would spend around $450 and have the hassle with sending it out, when they can buy a brand new evo 16g for around $550.

You may never have noticed it, but there will be problems. The biggest is balance. The shaft will be asked to spin over 10k rpm. It will eventually shake itself apart because the balance will be incorrect for easy rotation. Imagine a ceiling fan that has one blade shorter than the other. It will wobble and vibrate until it flys apart. It may not be worth salvaging.

Even with absolutley no shaft play?

Your main concern should be, "Where did the metal go?" It probably got sucked in through the intake track where, hopefully, it got trapped in the intercooler. Hopefully the pieces weren't smaller and made it past there. A secondary concern comes as the shaft wears out. Little bits of metal will find its way into the oil track where, hopefully, it was picked up by the oil filter or to the magnetized plug.

Well your right. My first concern is where did the piece go and how did it break off. A kid sold this turbo to my buddy who was planning on turboing his lancer oz a while back. I ended up taking this turbo off his hands when he realized he couldnt fund a project like that. I noticed the fin was chipped and I said wtf I was told this was in perfect condition. The original kid denys it and theres no way my buddy could have broken it considering he never installed it. Moral of the story is I got screwed when I baught this turbo.

It's not like it's hard to see that is half a fin missing. It doesn't sound like you got skrewed seeing as you bought it from a friend, I'm assuming you had ample time to look it over.

Actually, my buddy didn't know it was chipped either. I gave him the cash and we started the install a week after or something. Yea i know it was dumb, but nobody knew when or how it chipped. And either my friend or me were getting screwed. He helped me out some with the price. but no I never saw the fin was chipped.

Make him give you all the money back, hopefully if you find the right person you might be able to sell it for more than 100. Just cut your loss's and have fun with that 50 trim.
