my exhaust sounds so HORRIBLY bad when I start it all of a sudden its like a 68 mustang, all loud and grumbly when it used to be nice and smooth... The engine itself, it turns over but doesn't stay running, it stays on for a tops of maybe 5 - 10 seconds. I got it to stay running when I left college today by getting a jump, so I figured it was the battery, well I replaced the battery and I went to start it again, and same thing... So than I was like, maybe my gas is bad, so I tried to keep it running, yeah well than smoke like came up from under the car... THAN I went under the hood and pulled up the spark plug boots and there is oil all over them... anyone got ideas, I am hoping it isn't blown, and I think the oil is just oil that I have accidently spilled while pouring in that has gotten hot and moved all about inside there, but any help is appreciated....

Well more than likely the valve cover gasket needs changing, doesnt hurt to do it anyways. That would cause it if it's getting into the wires to the plugs. Also how old are those wires and plugs?

plugs and wires are only 4 months old... and the wires are guarenteed for life...

Ok well first things first, you need to probably replace your valve cover gasket, it's very easy to do. The gasket that goes around the spark plug wells probably worn out, my dads probe and my moms 626 (both mazda motors) did that and the gasket fixed it. Report back after doing that and let us know.

actually... what i did do was clean up the oil from in there, and cleaned everything in the engine bay pretty much with degreaser so i could finally see, took off the boots, cleaned em up good, put em back in, charged the battery for about an hour, and BAM it works fine now, what i think is that the battery had just enough charge to make the car run, but not enough to keep it running till the altenator fully went on

so, yeah, it did that not starting thing to me again, after running perfect for 12 hours... i think it is that the alternator isn't doing the hottest.... but the engine vibrates like the timing is off or something, but than, i waited maybe 20min and the damn thing started right up again!

i figured it out... i am drawin 95.5amps on a 70amp alternator. so i added a capacitor to my amplifier and its been working so far.... so yeah....

OK, the problem keeps coming up, but its like, if i let i keep trying to start it eventually it will start right... I think I have a ground that keeps going bad.

My question here is that if a barometric pressure sensor / air flow sensor completely blows, will it be enough to make the engine turn over than turn off??? My sensor has been going for the last couple months... sometimes the check engine light would come on and the exhaust would smell like rotten egg salad... :barf: ... but I am trying to get it running now, I need my car to get to college so I really need help here guys if anyone can help me. I also don't know anyone in the area that has a scanner/code reader for my car...
