Hello tuners,
I just bought some hks cams 272/272 :thumb: and it is tapped for the CAS. I don't have a CAS on the intake cam (yet)? will this make a difference if I installed them anyway, like any problems installing the intake cam because I don't have a CAS yet?
Also, can my car be a daily driver with the Cams in?
Thanks for the help
Matt

Edit: Also do I need to upgrade anything else in the head or can I just throw the cams on. Also I am putting on new valve cover gasket and cam seals.

You only need one CAS...

I don't know if you're following this, but vfaq has a whole article on this. Go to engine, and it's right under the timing stuff. It's called Installing a 1g CAS in a 2g. 272's should be fine on a daily driver. The idle may be a little lopey, but you probably won't notice it, especially if you set your idle to like 900. You don't need to upgrade springs or retainers or anything. Just drop those babies in. There's a lot of people with different opinions on the matter of degreeing them, so search for that. But basically, it all boils down to people agreeing that degreeing them on a dyno can squeeze a couple more horsepower out of them, but it is not worth all the money spent on hours at the dyno. Make sure everything is torqued down to spec. Good luck!

95-96 2gs have their Cam Angle Sensor behind the intake cam gear. As long as you are using the same cam gears you pulled off of your stock motor, just ignore the notch in the intake cam. It can be used if you end up doing a 6-bolt swap in the future.

HKS advertises their cams to be 'drop-in', and I would say the same if you plan on keeping the motor within the stock rev limits. Obviously it would be best to get upgraded valve springs and retainers, but it is not necessary for the cams to operate.

Degreeing cams will always help, but I believe the costs involved with it exceed the benefits; especially at your point in the game.

I daily drive my 264/272s just fine. I have my idle set at 750 and it has the lopey 'cam idle' that sounds sick as hell, but it idles just fine under a full load with A/C as well.

If I were you, I'd replace the valve cover gasket, cam seals, timing belt and all related parts, and be good to go.

I got my cams, 264/272, about a 9 months ago and just dropped them in and went. You don't have to do any other mods but running 272's it is recommended that you upgrade the springs/retainers. Also there shouldn't be any problems using them in a daily driver, but it will make you idle loop like an old school muscle-car.

Which is sexy LOL..... Did you notice significant power gains putting the 264/272...
( The 272 is the exhaust cam right? ) How did your power band feel, any different,
did the turbo act any differently ( like spool slower/quicker?)
I plan on getting the same set up cams as you have actually later down the line in the future, how much and where did you get yours from.?

Yes the 272 is my exhaust cam, the reason I went with that setup is because I wanted a street/strip setup. I gained 32hp and 34tq, honestly these cams were like night and day compared to the stock ones. They opened up the power band a lot, as soon as you get on it it pulls hard all the way to red line. Oh and the turbo does spool up quicker. I got mine from DSM Parts for $620.26 and that was 2nd Day Air, normal shipping would have had the total at $566. But I was in a rush to have my car back. Cams :rocks:!

its not a must to upgrade the springs and retainers but with that size cam it will be a little rough on the stock springs..stock cams are made to open and close gradually but with a bigger cam duration you will be opening and closing the vaulves alot faster and harder than with stock cams but they dont require upgrading springs and retainers

so whats the worse that can happen

thats usually a good idea its not a must but the way i have always seen things is if have to spend a little more money for better parts it might safe you alot of money if you did float a vaulve and screw some stuff up

I guess I will install upgraded springs and retainers later after I get some more money but I want these cams in and feel the power :sneaky:
Thanks for the replies
Also what are good brand of springs and retainers?

I don't see how it would make the turbo spool faster... Mine made it spool slower I think... Then again, I have 272 combo..

I didn't notice any difference under about 3500rpm, and my spool-up was unaffected. During daily driving, I wouldn't even notice they were upgraded until I let my car idle. The top end gain was incredible, especially at 25psi.

If you guys want to save money, FFWDConnection has exact copies of the HKS grinds (264/272 or 272/272) for $350 for the pair.

As for the CAS situation, just put your stock intake cam gear back on and that should cover everything for you.

you can also go with dual valve springs if you want to it all depends on what your looking to do with that motor and how much power you want to make
