Im coming into a set of 17's this weekend, and wanted an opinion on what a good tire size would be.

This is for a 1G AWD. Car is fitted with Eibach prokits and KYB AGX's

I was thinking of going with 245/45/17...too much?
my second choice was going to be going with 235/45/17.

pros...cons...opinions..? much appreciated.

235/45/17 here. Im sure if you put the 245's on it would rub the spring perch on the strut. I have AGX's and the 235's are already damn close.

Wheel width? I'd probably be cautious going above 235, but it'd really be helpful to match the tire to the rim width and then worry about rubbing based on the offset.

Falken Ziex ZE512's sized in 225/45ZR17 is what I have on mine. It's the closest size to stock rollout in a 17in tire.

its funny that so many people are running 45's when you all have different width tires. isnt the stock speedo set for tires that are slightly smaller than 25 inches? shouldn't you guys be off. 215/45 vs 235/45 should be a big difference, shouldn't it?

What's the rim width? I have a 17x8 running 235/45. It's kinda thick for a sidewall, but don't really have problems even with my drop. If you run 245/45 on a wider than 8" rim wouldn't it go a lil'past the lip?

215 is the width of the tire in millimeters. 45 would be the height of the sidewall. My stock tires were 205/55/16. As a rule of thumb when you go up an inch in rim. You add 10 to the width and subtract 10 from the sidewall. Im not exactly sure what you would do when going wider. 225 or 235 should definately work for 7.5

I ran a 225 width before on my 2G, but it was 225/50/16.

shouldnt I be able to get away with a 235/45/17..?

Ill have to ask for offset..

no its for every 20 mm of width you go down to the next sidewall size to keep it as close as possible to the overall circumference...if you came with 16" and you upgrade to 17" you automatically go to the next sidewall size down (ex: you had 205/55/16 you buy 17" rims you get ATLEAST 205/50/17 to keep the overall circumference close).

16" rims
205/55/16 = 78.2 ( stock 1g & 2g FWD)
225/50/16 = 78.1 (look how close it is to the OEM circumference)
245/45/16 = 77.5 (the widest practical wheels on a DSM)

17" rims
215/50/17 = 80 (stock on 2g GSX)
235/45/17 = 79.6 (look how close it is to the OEM circumference)
225/45/17 = 78.5 (look how close it is to the OEM 16" size this is why this is a popular size for DSMers)
245/40/17 = 77.6 (the widest practical wheels on a DSM)

I'm running 17x7. offset is between 43-46. I can't remember exactly. I got all this off here on DSMTuners, just can't remember what posts they were. I'm running a 235/45 tire all around. Funny part is this is on a 96 and on my friends 91 VR4 Galant, hes running the same dimensions, and his wheels stick out of the wheel well. Don't look to fancy. If I remember on a 1st Gen, you can fit 235 find, and 245's even if u find a good enough offset. Thats the hardest thing to find. Good Luck :thumb:

45 is the % of the width that the sidewalls are, so 215/45 will have different sidewalls from 235/45

I got the wheels today....man 215 is a bit wider than I expected...makes me wonder what 235 is going to look like...or even fit.

how many of you are running 235...? any problems..?

Kumho 711's are whats on the car now, haha. It seems to be a pretty good tire, was reading reviews for it the other day...

yes that is correct. that is why for every 20mm of tires you go down one size (45 to 40) to keep the overall circumference the same/ So if you car came with 215/45/17 from the factory 235/40/17 would be really close to the overall circumference:dsm:

offset is 42.

so its safe then to go with 235? I was lookin at the tires on there now, and they look decently sized already as is...I just want to go a little wider, wide as possible anyways.

235-40-17's on a 7.5" wheel here. Mine is also a 1g with pro kits. See for yourself and see if you like the way it looks.

thats the exact rubber size i've been looking at, need some nice 17's to go with it first. picking rims is harder than picking tires, even though tires are much more important. there are so many rims out there it makes it harder than tires could ever be.

I had 235/40/18 tires on 18 x 7.5 wheels with a +42mm offset and I had no poblems with the wheels/ tires fitting on my 1g. My 2g I had to get spacers for the rear because the tires barely rubbed the control arm. My 1g they fit fine and had room to spare. Which is why this summer I"m going to get 17 x 8.5 wheels with 255/40/17 tires and aiming for an offset of around 35-38. Tires may stick out a little but doubt it would be that much, I have to get body work done to my car anyway so I can maybe have the fenders flared out a little or something. But thats not till mid summer.
