Sherwood Park,
I am looking to buy a new set of tires for the upcoming season. These will be used for drag, auto x, and daily driving so I would like them to last for at least a season. Here are my 3 choices:

- Pirelli P Zero Corsa $128 each

- Michelin Pilot Sport Cup $255 each

- Yokohama ADVAN A048 $273 each

What do you guys think?

i think that which ever one you think works best. cuz 250 a tire you got some money. there is a faqs forum that talks bout tires. read it

nitto 555 or toyo proxes 4 thats what i narrowed it down to for myself

The michelin pilot sport cups are the tire of choice for most exotic drivers wanting to get the best all around tire. I run the Falken Azenis because I didn't want to spend $255 a tire, I got stock sizers for only $75.

What do you think about the pirelli's then since they are half the price?

I don't have alot of money but tires is a good investment for performance What's the point of having a ton of power if all you are going to do is spin?. As for the tire forum do you have a link?

The pirelli's are standard equipment on cars such as porsche and ferarri so they're obviously a good tire.

I will most likely get some Pirelli's. I have read some reviews and everyone seems to like them, good life and grip, and they are pretty cheap.

What size tyre are you looking for ?
What diameter & width are your wheels ?
How many events do you do annually ?
How much road milage will you cover ?
How much grip are you looking for ?
Do you care more about drag racing (ie soft sidewalls) or auto-x (stiff sidewalls)

That should narrow it down :)

- 235/40/18 or 225/40/18
- 18 x 8.5
- 10
- ~10k
- As much as possible but still being able to last daily driving
- I will be doing more drag racing than auto x

Thanks.

look at the treadwear rating on all tires and that will give you a good picture of how they will last. higher number=longer life expectancy.

Pirelli P Zero Corsa: 60_gets the extra grip from a "r" type compound=soft=wear quick=probably will not last a season of racing and daily driving...probably has phenominal dry grip though. straight off pirelli site: "Caution: The P Zero Corsa is not recommended for driving on extremely wet roads where there is the risk of hydroplaning."

Yokohama ADVAN A048: 60_gets the extra grip from a "r" type compound=soft=wear quick=will not last a season of racing and daily driving...has phenominal dry grip though. less than great wet grip.

michelin pilot sport cup: 80_gets the extra grip from a "r" type compound=soft=wear quick=probably will not last a season of racing and daily driving...probably has phenominal dry grip though. however looking at the tread it would have less than great wet grip (see pirelli).

i would not use any of these tires on a daily driven car except to maybe drive to the track and as soon as i got the car back home i would swap them back out for more durable street tires.

my .02...get a good set of street tires and when you are ready for track days, any of the above would be great...personally i am partial to yokohama...run the parada spec2 (tw=300) on my car for the street and a set of advan in garage for those autocross days.

There is a guy in my club with a set A032 and he has been using them daily (during the summers) for about a year and a half.

does he have them on daily for the summer only? how many track days does that equal to? what are the avg. summer temps there in canada (here in houston...95+)?
the ao32r is what is in my garage...i would not use them as a daily tire because they would wear out to fast.

Yeah he has them on for the summer only. Ave temps I would say are around 22 celcius, not to sure what that works out to.

A popular STS/STX tyre is the Kumho MX, 22/40.18, 235/40.18 and 245/40.18 all fit your rims. I believe they are quite effective drag tyres - the sidewalls are more street tye soft than race tyre stiff, mileage fits your needs, and they work well in the rain (do you deal with rain often ?)

All the tyres you mention (along with the A032R) have very stiff sidewalls, so they will supposedly launch quite poorly (not my expertise, but I'm told this is the case).

A032Rs and Michelin Sport Cups offer at best "good" street tyre grip, neither are particularly good in the rain either. Another option would be the 225/40.18 Kumho V700 ECSTA - decently good rain tyre, a good autocross tyre and may last 10k - they survive a season as street/autocross tyres on a Viper, so they may hold up similarly for your purposes. Quite a bit more grip than the A032R or Sport Cup.

As I understand it, the requirements of drag racing tyres conflict directly with autocrossing, I'm sure there's more expert opinon on that available

very true on the ao32r at least

very true...soft side to launch...stiffer for road race. will be a definate compromise (?) to find a tire to do all 3 and you will still have poor life expectancy. better to save to high dollar race tires for the track and have a good set of street tires for the street...and if you want to do all 3...another set for the 1/4.

I agree that you should look into the Kumho MX and Falken Azenis. For the price of the pilots you can get two sets of either of those. They will wear somewhat quickly if you are daily driving them but like I said....you can get two sets of those for the price of the michelins and are pretty much the best streetable autoX tires out in many peoples opinion.

Azenis are not available in 18" diameters - plus they have race-tyre-stiff sidewalls, so will probably not do well drag-racing.

Charles

They were sticky enough to easily shave .2 off of my 60's.
