Help finding 2g RPM signal from ECU

I am looking for which specific pin # on the pinout chart from Vfaq would be the best to tap into for an RPM reading for my shift light for my 2g. The directions say to tap into the negative feed of the coil, but I would like to avoid going into the engine bay and go to the ECU. I searched like crazy but all I could find were articles about 1g's. However I found one that said go to pin # 58 which is the engine ignition signal. Has anyone tryed this, and does it give an accurate reading. Or is there a better pin to tap into? Thanks for the help.
 
Since most DSM's have a wasted spark ignition system with two coils you can't just follow the directions on your shift light. The ECU has two possible signals that might work with your light. One is the Crank Angle sensor on pin 89. The other is the Ignition Pulse detect signal on pin 58.

My shift light displays the rpm's digitally, so does this mean that any where I hook it up it won't be acurate? Because if it pulses 4 times per rev, the rpm count will be way high. Is there any solution for this? Do you know of anywhere on this car I can hook it up to?

Look someone has to have put a shift light in a 2g...All I need to know is where to find the signal wire for the existing tach, or ANYWHERE to get an accurate rpm signal from. Every post I'v seen on this topic is unexplanitory and vague. Please I need some help, I've been searching this topic for 2 days and I havn't found a definate answer... Thanks for the help

Alright thanks for the help guys, Ill give it a shot in the morning and let you know how it turned out.

Ok I just tryed pin 58, and pin 89 and neither of them gave me ne thing. Does anyone know where the negative terminal on the coil is, or where the signal wire for the existing tach is located????

As I tried to explain before there are two coils, so two negative terminals one for each transistor in the Power Transistor Module. The tachometer uses the signal on pin 58.

Are you sure you got the right pins?

People have a problem all the time getting confused by the fact that you count the pins looking at the back of the connector where the wires come out just like you do looking into the pins on the ECU.

The is what the VFAQ and manuals are trying to show you. Ignore that this is a 1G ECU and connector. The point remains the same.

Thanks guys for all the help its much appreciated. However I found another place to tap into that is easily accessable and out in the open. This is also where Autometer reccomends to tap into for 2g dsms. So for any one who has asked this question (I know there is a lot of you) here it is.....

To the left of the coil pack there is an 8-pin connector that sticks straight up. I beleive this is the connector for the power transistor. The solid white wire is what sends the signal to the ECU (at least on a 98 eclipse). I tapped into this and it worked very well. And for those who havn't ran wires into the engine bay before, you can poke a hole through the steering columb boot and run the wire right into the engine bay with no problem. :thumb:
 
Oh, I understand...I must have gotten confused looking at the pinout chart like you said then. :confused: Thanks again for the help though man.
