I'm new here. I got myself a '91 Eagle Talon TSi AWD yesterday.

I actually had some questions to see if there are common problems with them.

It was tuned at AMS and has a decent amount done to it, but the brakes don't work. It overheats and the shifter will only go into 3rd, neutral and 4th.

Brakes: Pedal goes to the floor, and there is no stopping power. The brake fluid level was completely out. So I'm guessing there is a leak and lots of air in the lines. Never done it before but I suppose I'll replace the lines, they are pretty rusty anyway.

Overheating: It does have an aftermarket radiator. The fans don't come on at all. But it shouldn't overheat when just sitting at idle within maybe 10 minutes. Flush system? Thermostat?

Shifting: The shifter will not move at all to the either side. I took of the center console and removed the cotter pin holding on the left shift linkage piece and the shifter could easily move side ways. So the driver side shifter linkage does not want to move forward or backwards. Hoping it is just that, I'm guessing worst case scenario is I have to take apart the trans or possibly replace it.

Any help would be appreciated :) I know this is the wrong forum thread, but I couldn't find the right one.

NO a car can overheat at idle with no fans. even in just 5 mins.

Brake leak for sure.

The trans cable might be in a bind, the cables are located to the left of the head of the engine right on top of the trans.

I'm gonna give you some GREAT advice, that i wish someone would have shared with me when i bought my first dsm. Get out while you still can!!!:|

You're a probationary member so you posted fine.

Brakes: leaks and new lines, SS lines would work great.

Cooling: Get those fans on. Change thermostat anyway but make sure those fans come on!

Shifting: Hopefully it's not a broken shift fork. Check your cables and maybe replace lines with SS one and bleed the slave.

Update!

Brakes: Replaced the section that was leaking, and bled them. They at least give stopping power. Enough to stop me from spinning the wheel by hand. Not sure if it will stop the car while it is moving yet. But it is definitely improvement.

Cooling: Haven't started the car again yet. But I did find an umarked fuse blown and the A/C Fan fuse blown. Might not solve the problem, but it won't hurt.

Trans: I took of the cotter pin holding the line on the part that connects to the trans. The linkage moves back and forth fine. So I am guessing it is either that piece which connects to the trans, or something inside the trans itself.

Please let me know if you have any advice/ideas.

You should be fine on stopping on the street, only way to check is actually driving the car.

Replace the fuses and check connectors for the fans and go from there.

Start the car and try to put the car in all gears.

Update 1.5ish: AC fan works but blows fuse after a while. Although it was connected to this weird rusty box(by two of the four wires) which I am guessing monitored engine bay temperature. I unplugged it and I'll see if that helps. Otherwise maybe go up a bit on the fuse amperage.

The normal fan is hard to push and has a lot of resistance. Guessing that needs to be replaced.
